About Lynwood, IL

Spacious farmland and suburban streets resting on the Illinois-Indiana state line

Incorporated in 1959, the village of Lynwood has grown with new developments over the years, but homebuyers can still find a rustic blend of empty fields and farmlands as well as modern suburbia, resting on the Illinois state line with Indiana. Located 27 miles south of downtown Chicago, Lynwood is a bedroom community where residents enjoy quiet living and proximity to convenient amenities and an abundance of green spaces and recreation facilities. “Lynwood is a very peaceful [community],” says Margaret Banks, a 29-year real estate agent with Home Sellers Realty, Inc. “And home prices are a bit higher than in surrounding villages, with homes being larger and more modern.”

Brownell Woods offers creek fishing and miles of hiking

Southland Center is a multipurpose athletic center on Volbrecht Road that houses facilities for sports such as volleyball, basketball and baseball. When school lets out for the summer, young athletes can sign up for one of Southland Center’s day camps or sports programs, including basketball shooting camps and group volleyball clinics. A mile’s drive north can take residents to Brownell Woods, one of the many woodland parks included in the Forest Preserves of the Cook County system. Brownell Woods allows for bird watching, creek fishing, and hiking along 12 miles of wooded trails that wind alongside Thorn Creek; Brownell Woods is also a popular spot for picnicking and having outdoor reunions in the warmer months.

Game Tyme Sports Bar & Grill is right at home

Game Tyme Sports Bar & Grill is where residents can play a round of pool before chowing down on some chicken tacos, jumbo shrimp or wings. “Being close to the expressway makes it easy to get to anything from nearby grocery stores to downtown Chicago,” says Banks. The Highland Grove Shopping Center is 7 miles east for retail options, from Target to Nordstrom Rack and regional grocery chain Meijer.

Midcentury styles with new developments

Home costs in the area range from $80,000 for two-bedroom condos to $400,000 for modern, custom-built homes. “Lynwood is a bedroom community where lots of residents commute to downtown Chicago for work. One of the biggest appeals is that it’s really quiet, and a place where you can come to unwind after a busy day,” says Banks. Most homes in the area were built after 1970, and continuous development means new homes are consistently popping up on the market. A walk along the wide sidewalks of Lynwood’s residential streets reveals a diversity of home styles, old and new, from split levels and brick ranches to farmhouses and Cape Cods. Folks who live on Lake Shore Drive and Lake Lynwood Drive enjoy beautiful lake views year-round. “Lakefront residents can be seen paddleboarding and kayaking out on the water in the summer months,” Banks says.
