Farmland and highways surrounding Kutztown

Maxatawny Township was first settled in 1720 as a farming community, and remnants of that historic agrarian society remain today. Sprawling stretches of fields and pastures connect the small residential hubs of Lyons, Bowers and Maxatawny, all surrounding the quaint college town of Kutztown. Residents who settle here, on the outskirts of Kutztown, enjoy access to the close-knit town and its amenities while living more spaciously in homes with generous lots. Plus, farm-fresh food vendors, mountainous outdoor recreation and access to U.S. Route 222 are among some of the benefits of country living in Maxatawny. Some professionals commute to Reading and Allentown, both roughly 20 to 25 miles away, but a couple of major industrial employers are also based in the township.

Residential hubs amid rural land

Homes in Maxatawny Township tend to be situated along rural back roads or clustered in small town centers. Semi-rural mid-20th-century ranch-style homes and cottages are common, with some later New Traditional developments from the early 2000s. One benefit of country living is the extra elbow room, with lot sizes between a quarter-acre and a full acre. While some residents are within shouting distance of their neighbors, others are surrounded by fields and pastures on all sides. While most single-family homes are priced between $200,000 and $500,000, some townhouses and duplexes in the heart of towns, such as Lyons or Bowers, can sell from $125,000 to $275,000.

Kutztown schools from elementary to university levels

Maxatawny homes are zoned to the Kutztown Area School District, with three of the district’s schools clustered together on the cusp of Maxatawny Township and the Borough of Kutztown. Kutztown Elementary scores a B-plus from Niche, while Kutztown Area Middle earns a B grade. Kutztown Area High receives a B-plus and offers internship programs geared toward career exploration and global citizenship. Kutztown is also home to Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, a public university with an enrollment of roughly 8,000. Although it was founded in 1866 as a teachers’ college, the university has since expanded its curriculum to the liberal arts and sciences.

Community events and resources in Kutztown

Kutztown is the site of the Kutztown Folk Festival, a nine-day celebration with vendors, games and live artisanal demonstrations. The small town hosts a rotating schedule of events, as well as concerts in the summer and productions put on by the University. The Kutztown Community Library also serves the surrounding Maxatawny Township. "One of our most popular services is a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that patrons can rent monthly," explains Janet Youst, the library's director. "There's a few dead spots out there, so some people use it for their homes, and others take it on vacation." Weekly library events like Wiggly Wednesday, a structured playtime for young kids and their caregivers, and Better with Age, a senior club, are also frequented by residents.

Farm-fresh food and local eateries along U.S. Route 222

Although retail might be sparse in this rural area, meat and produce almost always come fresh from the farmland. At Renninger’s Antique and Farmer’s Market, residents can stock the fridge while perusing artisan goods and handmade wares. Other family-owned shops, such as Burkholder’s Farm Market, also provide fresh and canned groceries, plus other novelties, while a couple of big-box stores like Giant can be found in Kutztown. Other local spots are scattered throughout the countryside. Along U.S. Route 222, the Shoppes of Premise Maid is a fairy-tale chocolate shop with Tudor-inspired buildings. With its Tudor-inspired buildings and 12-foot-tall nutcracker. Down the road, Firehouse Coffee sells lattes and fresh-roasted grounds out of a fire station-themed building. To the south, Snuzzle’s serves up pizza in a no-frills, cash-only establishment that’s off the beaten path. “I know a lot of people around Reading actually go up to the Kutztown area for all the wineries,” notes Kristin Lightcap, a Realtor with Pagoda Realty. Hilltop Haven Wines, Setter Ridge Vineyards and the Cellar by Stony Run Winery are just some of the many vineyards in and around Maxatawny Township.

Plenty of outdoors to explore around Blue Mountain

Located in Bowers, William DeLong Memorial Park is the township’s most robust park. A paved half-mile trail meanders through the mature, shady trees, with a playground and basketball court close by. The Saucony Creek also runs along the park grounds, making it a popular fishing spot. Notably, the park is also the site of the annual Chile Pepper Festival, complete with a jalapeno eating contest and all things spicy. More rugged recreation lies just beyond the township’s borders at the foothills of Blue Mountain and Hawk Mountain, where hunting lands and golf courses are tucked away. "It's a beautiful area," Youst says. "One of the most popular attractions is the nearby access to the Appalachian Trail — a lot of residents hike some of it." At Crystal Cave, school field trips and tourist groups embark on underground tours of centuries-old geological formations, with other attractions such as gemstone panning and mini golf to keep families coming back.

Directly between Allentown and Reading

U.S. Route 222 passes through Maxatawny, putting residents 20 to 25 miles from both Allentown and Reading. In Allentown, healthcare and air travel are accessible from Lehigh Valley International Airport and Lehigh Valley Hospital. Philadelphia is also roughly 65 to 70 miles away, with Interstate 78 access directly north of the township. Although the Allentown & Auburn Railroad runs through Maxatawny, it’s primarily used for seasonal scenic tours such as fall foliage rides and trains with Santa. Some major industrial centers are based in Maxatawny Township, including East Penn Manufacturing in Lyons.
