About Lyons, IL

About Lyons, IL

Suburban village located 12 miles southwest of Chicago Loop

The village of Lyons may only be approximately 12 miles southwest of the Chicago loop, but this bustling suburb contains a world of its own. “Lyons is a great location; you’re just outside the city, and you still get a nice neighborhood feeling,” says Brandon Schuppe, a Lyons native and a real estate broker with SKYDAN Real Estate Sales. Household names like Reynolds Aluminum helped this area build its reputation as a manufacturing base, and a deep-rooted history has spawned some of Lyons’ most iconic landmarks, like the 1908 Hofmann Tower. Today, this village seeks to move into a post-industrial chapter that focuses on its business-friendly culture, strategic location and new forms of single- and multi-family housing. Considered to be both highly bikeable and walkable, Lyons offers convenient access to parks, restaurants and municipal buildings located right near residential areas.

Craftsman-style bungalows for approximately $250,000

The residential parts of this village have both historic and modern homes; however, many of the older properties from the early twentieth century have been well-maintained and renovated throughout the years. Homes here reflect a mix of architectural styles, including Craftsman-style bungalows, ranch-style residences featuring gambrel roofs, and traditional dwellings with front-facing gables. Many of the homes in this area also feature covered front porches, and a handful of properties come with paved driveways and garages. Residences here can often range in price from approximately $160,000 to about $320,000, with a median home price of just under $240,000.

Make a splash at Cermak Family Aquatic Center

“The Village of Lyons just recently added a large recreation park next to the Village Hall – they added new little league fields and a real nice outdoor event area,” Schuppe says, referring to the newly built Veterans Park, which also offers basketball courts, a playground and a paved walking path. The Cermak Woods and Ottawa Trail Woods nature preserves make up a large part of east Lyons—both are hugged by the Des Plaines River and offer residents the opportunity to observe wildlife while hiking. Cermak Woods is also home to the Cermak Quarry and the Cermak Family Aquatic Center, which opens during the warmer months and features a lazy river, numerous water slides, an aquatic playground and plenty of lounge areas.

For groceries, residents can head to Aldi in the nearby Pershing Plaza, which also features a Marshall’s department store. Near Village Hall and Veterans Park, Darla’s Deli & Café of Lyons has a menu full of café favorites, including coffee drinks and specialty subs. Residents looking for nightlife options can find plenty of bars in the South Lyons area; at places like BuckleDown Brewing, patrons can enjoy trivia games in a modern warehouse setting. “Stella’s Restaurant, which also has batting cafes, is another popular spot in town, especially amongst the younger population,” Schuppe adds.

Outdoor concerts hosted by the Village of Lyons

“During the summer months, the Village of Lyons hosts outdoor events, such as Music in the Park, a Father’s Day car show, and a number of youth activities,” Schuppe says. Village Hall also hosts a Veterans Day Ceremony in November, as well as several holiday events during the Wintertime and community trick-or-treat gatherings on Halloween. In addition, the Brookfield Zoo is located less than 3 miles north of Lyons and is home to more than 500 species of animals from across the planet.

Easy access to Metra Rail's Riverside train station

Residents are located “2 miles north of the Interstate 55 expressway and about 5 miles south of the Interstate 290 expressway. Locals can also access the neighboring village of Riverside and connect with the Metra Train,” Schuppe says. The Riverside train station is part of Metra Rail’s BSNF line and runs between Downtown Chicago and Aurora with multiple stops along the way. Public transportation is also provided by the Pace bus, which operates a fixed route along 47th Street. For those looking to catch a flight, the O’Hare International Airport is located an approximately 21-mile drive away using I-294 North.
