Five and a half miles northeast of Cuyahoga Valley National Park and 20 miles south of Cleveland, the City of Macedonia combines busy streets and big box shops with suburban tranquility and a hello-neighbor atmosphere planted among the thick forests of northeast Ohio. “Cuyahoga Valley is practically in our backyard,” says Diane Gentille, a greater Cleveland Realtor with 10 years of experience and a former Macedonia resident. Even though she’s moved out of the city, she still lives nearby and participates in the community. “It’s the kind of place where eventually everyone around will know your name.”

Big box shops a-plenty
Macedonia functions as the big box shopping hub for the surrounding communities. In the center east, stores such as Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Kohl’s and Nordstrom sit in the Macedonia Commons Shopping Plaza along East Aurora Road. About a quarter mile further east, the Crossing at Gold Links Shopping Plaza hosts a Target, Giant Eagle and an Aldi. According to Gentille, these areas are still expanding their lists of stores. “There are also a lot of mom-and-pop restaurants around as well,” says Gentille. She fondly remembers the shops and restaurants now closed and those still in business. She still frequents the Blue Willow Lounge, a local bar on South Freeway Drive. The establishment offers a classic American bar experience, with sports on the television, pool tables, dart boards and a mini-bowling area. Patrons indulge in nightly events such as DJ dance nights with local DJ Lice and trivia game nights. Shoppers wanting local produce visit Peppers Fresh Market on Ledge Road in the northeast. Summit Mall is 18 miles southwest near the city of Akron.

The city’s infrastructure is very car-centric, with Highland Road being the only thoroughfare with a bus route from RTA Cleveland Metro. It Bedford Road and East Aurora Road serve as the main veins of local traffic. Highways, including I-271 and Ohio-8, run through the city as well, allowing for simple traffic to Cleveland and the Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport, 25 miles northwest.

The three parks of Macedonia
Macedonia has three parks: Sugarbush Park in the north, Longwood Park in the east and Macedonia Memorial Park in the west. People with Sugarbush Park, a short walk away or even in their backyard, enjoy hiking trails running through thick forests filled with birdsong. At 300 acres, Longwood Park is the largest of the three, with baseball diamonds, playgrounds, forests and a driving range named Windmill Golf Center. Home of the Macedonia Recreation Center, the park is the premiere location for city events. Lastly, Macedonia Memorial Park is a small place, less than an acre in size, intended not for big events and baseball games but as a place of respect for local veterans.

Streets with divers styles
Along the winding streets and cul-de-sacs of Macedonia’s residential neighborhoods, house hunters find architectural styles such as ranch houses, Colonial Revivals, Craftsman and New Traditional Homes all within doors of each other. However, houses are not as diversely organized when it comes to price. A homebuyer can expect a price range of $150,000 to $400,000, with prices generally increasing southward. A few homes sprinkled throughout the city sell in a higher range of $500,000 to $700,000, but these are much rarer.

Summerfest in Longwood Park
Over a June weekend, locals clammer to take part in the city’s yearly Summerfest. Festivities take place in Longwood Park and include amusement park rides, live music and entertainment from local bands, a 5k race and a fireworks display. Between rides and games, attendees grab snacks at the food truck station in the city’s recreation center parking lot. “It’s great to bring the kids to enjoy all the rides,” says Gentille.

Indian Creek sometimes floods
While otherwise positive, living in Macedonia does have some inconveniences and even hazards. Most homes are away from the highways, but those that aren’t may deal with noise during heavy traffic. Flooding is also an issue for some properties, with overflows from the local Indian Creek spilling onto nearby streets.
