A new dawn for Beall’s Hill Historic District
When the Historic Macon Foundation and its partners set out to revitalize Beall’s Hill Historic District in 2007, the goal wasn’t just to restore the buildings in the Victorian-era enclave — it was to rejuvenate the entire community. “Beall’s Hill, Huguenin Heights and Tattnall Square Heights are all neighborhoods that were part of the Historic Macon Foundation’s neighborhood revitalization efforts,” says Trish Whitley, a lifelong Maconite and director of destination development for Visit Macon. “It’s not just about the revitalization of the structures, but it’s about the ability for people to buy houses in the neighborhood. They didn’t want to gentrify the neighborhoods; they wanted them to be authentic neighborhoods accessible to all people.” Today, Beall’s Hill Historic District is one of the city's most sought-after areas thanks to its historic homes that are within walking distance of neighboring Mercer University, Atrium Health Navicent and Tattnall Square Park. It's also less than a mile from Downtown Macon.

Restored Victorians and new cottages
New sidewalks, designated on-street parking, post-top lights and trees have helped breathe new life into the neighborhood’s gridded streets. Craftsman-style cottages, bungalows and regal Victorian homes — some dating back to the 1860s — are common. Houses are rehabbed if possible; those beyond repair are deconstructed and their materials are repurposed by a local business partner as part of the city's revitalization efforts, rather than sent to a landfill. New homes are built on empty lots and designed to maintain the architectural integrity of the neighborhood. Incentives like state and federal tax credit programs and down payment assistance for full-time Mercer University employees have helped increase homeownership in the community. Some homes have been divided into duplexes and apartments. Fixer-uppers can range from $40,000 to $115,000. Renovated cottages and shotgun homes can range from $100,000 to $250,000. Prices increase with size and style, ranging from $175,000 to $300,000 for a larger renovated bungalow, duplex or Queen Anne home. Like-new homes built in the early 2010s range between $160,000 and $265,000. Large historic houses of more than 2,500 square feet range from $300,000 to $380,000.
Stately Victorian mansions are part of the allure of the Bealls Hill Historic District.

Walking distance to Tattnall Square Park
One of the neighborhood's biggest perks is its proximity to parks, museums and entertainment. Residents often walk or bike to neighboring Tattnall Square Park, a popular spot for relaxation, whether that be a quiet stroll on the park’s paved paths, sitting by the fountain or reading under the gazebo. There are also pickleball courts, playgrounds and a soccer field. Carolyn Crayton Park is 2 miles east and has a skate park, picnic shelters and playgrounds. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, about 3.5 miles east across the Ocmulgee River, is the site of more than 12,000 years of continuous human habitation and is poised to become Georgia’s first National Park. Closer to home are the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Tubman Museum, which houses exhibits showcasing African American history, art and culture.

Yollah, a self-proclaimed social kitchen and garden, serves up Latin fare with Southern flair using ingredients from local farms.
