Connected east side Madison neighborhood developed in the 1970s
Hiestand is a conveniently connected suburban neighborhood on Madison’s east side. “It’s not in the heart of the city, but it’s still close to everything,” says Justin May, a Realtor with Realty Executives Cooper Spransy. “If you don’t want to be in the center of downtown but still want to be able to walk or bike everywhere, you can do that in Hiestand.” Several neighborhood parks dot the area. Shopping and dining options are plentiful at East Towne Mall and along U.S. Route 51. With major highways bordering the neighborhood on three sides and the Dane County Regional Airport less than 5 miles away, residents can easily explore all of Madison and beyond.
Ranch homes and split-levels from the 1970s and 80s
Hiestand has a variety of housing, with the most common being single-family homes. Houses sit along wide, flat streets with tall trees and tidy sidewalks. Homes typically have trimmed lawns, and some feature hedges and flowers framing front windows. Ranch-style and split-level homes are the most popular styles here, with some Colonial Revivals sprinkled in. Most houses date back to the 1970s and ‘80s. “Being east side, things are less expensive here than on the west side,” says Matt Deadman, a broker associate and Realtor with Real Broker LLC. This is because houses on the west side tend to be newer, and the west side is a bit closer to UW Madison. Prices range from $300,000 to $450,000 for single-family homes. Condos, mostly on the western side of the neighborhood across from Hiestand Park, can cost between $200,000 and $235,000.
La Follette High School shows off recent renovations
Families can send their kids to the Madison Metropolitan School District, which Niche rates a B-plus. Schenk Elementary scores a B-minus and serves the western part of the neighborhood. Students living south of Thompson Street, between Milo Lane and the Interstate, can attend Kennedy Elementary, earning a B-minus. Both elementary schools feed into Whitehorse Middle School, which scores a B-minus as well. La Follette High School scores a B and has over 20 athletic teams and numerous AP course offerings. La Follette also recently completed a major campus renovation, updating classrooms, the gym and performing arts facilities.
East side location close to major thoroughfares in all directions
Hiestand is about 6 miles northeast of downtown Madison. U.S. Route 51 provides a north-south corridor connecting to Aberg Avenue and the Beltline Highway, two of Madison’s major traffic arteries. Interstates 90 and 39 offer access to Milwaukee, Chicago or northern Wisconsin. Buses run along Thompson and Milwaukee streets. UW Health’s Madison East Hospital is about 6 miles north, and the Dane County Regional Airport is about 5 miles away.
Disc golf course and potential wildlife sightings at Hiestand Park
Residents are steps away from Hiestand Park, which has forested paths where keen-eyed observers might catch sight of local wildlife like hawks and sandhill cranes. The park is best known for its disc golf course. Honeysuckle Park is no more than a mile and a half away from anywhere in the neighborhood and has a playground where kids can enjoy interactive activities like a scavenger hunt. “Hiestand is close to Lake Monona,” May says. “There’s so much value for people who want an outdoorsy lifestyle with biking, hiking and canoeing.” A boat launch onto Lake Monona is about 2 miles away.
Authentic Colombian dishes at La Pollera Colombiana
Local restaurants and fast-food chains alike are scattered near the neighborhood, especially along Highway 51. La Pollera Colombiana is known for its traditional dishes and cultural pride — many meals are dressed with a toothpick adorned by a Colombian flag. Other features include colorful cocktails, live music and dancing on some nights. South of Hiestand, the Cottage Café on Cottage Grove Road serves traditional diner fare and is often packed for breakfast. Residents can pick up groceries at Woodman’s Food Center on Milwaukee Street. Even more shopping is under 3 miles away at East Towne Mall.
Dane County Farmers Market surrounds the Capitol
Hiestand isn’t far from annual east-side neighborhood festivals, such as the Fete de Marquette and AtwoodFest. The Dane County Farmers Market surrounds the Capitol Square on Saturday mornings for the largest producers-only farmers market in the United States before moving indoors to the Monona Terrace during the colder months.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
