Idyllic Westside Madison living
Orchard Ridge is a picturesque suburb on Madison’s west side, less than 30 minutes from downtown. Overlooking two major thoroughfares, West Beltline Highway and US Highway 151, the surrounding metro is within easy reach. But it’s the neighborhood’s quiet, welcoming atmosphere and myriad amenities that appeal to homebuyers most. “It’s a very user-friendly, livable and long-established community. And the people here are extremely friendly and helpful. It’s the kind of neighborhood where everyone knows and looks out for each other,” says eXp Realty’s Broker Associate Sue Romens, who grew up in Orchard Ridge. Today, Romens works with her daughter, Broker Associate Rachel Romens, representing clients buying and selling homes locally. They’ve had several active listings in Orchard Ridge recently. “The neighborhood is full of avid gardeners and the lots here are large and have beautiful trees and mature landscaping. There’s an annual neighborhood potluck picnic party and a Fourth of July celebration, a local park and a beautiful pool, too. I loved growing up here.”

Classic midcentury homes
Home prices here run from around $330,000 to more than $550,000. Most were built in the 1960s. “There’s a mixture of original homeowners who love the neighborhood so much that they’ve never moved and new people who are single or have young families that just moved in because homes are just now starting to turnover,” says Romens, adding that her parents are part of the original cohort of Orchard Ridge neighbors, having lived here for nearly 65 years. “There are ranch homes as well as two-story homes as well as multi-level homes, so there’s really every type of home here. And most of them have oversized garages, too,” says Romens. She adds that these homes have all been very well-maintained over the years and that many have been updated, some with additions. There are also apartments and condos available here, along Gilbert, Hammersley and Reetz Roads.

Convenient to public and private schools
Neighborhood kids can go to highly rated schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District, including Orchard Ridge Elementary, Toki Middle and Vel Phillips Memorial High. Both the elementary and middle schools are located within half a mile of most homes, off Russett Road. In 2024, Orchard Ridge earned a B grade from Niche. Toki got a B-minus and Memorial got an A that same year. Teens interested in science, technology, engineering and math can earn college credit for courses taken in the high school’s no-cost Early College STEM Academy, a program partnership between the district and Madison College. Off Flad Avenue just a block north of Orchard Ridge Elementary, there’s also St. Maria Goretti Catholic School. “Having the parochial school right in the dead center of the neighborhood makes Orchard Ridge unique. Not all neighborhoods have public schools in them, let alone a private school as well,” Romens says.

Summertime swimming haven
At Orchard Ridge Park, on the north side of the neighborhood well within a mile of most homes, locals can take a stroll on the smooth, paved path or picnic on the shady lawn. There’s even a classic playground and a basketball court. But the amenity that really makes Orchard Ridge stand out among Westside Madison suburbs is Ridgewood Pool. “It’s a real asset to the community,” says Romens, adding that it’s located so conveniently at the center of the neighborhood that many local kids walk or ride their bikes there. “They just re-did the competition pool, and there’s another full-sized pool, too, it’s one of the only city aquatic facilities with two pools,” Romens says. Not only does Ridgewood have two regulation-sized pools for recreation and competition, it also has a zero-depth entry wading pool, and a separate diving well with two low-dives and the only outdoor high-dive in Madison. “People even come from out of the neighborhood for swim lessons and the swim and dive team,” Romens says, referring to Ridgewood’s summer league team, which competes in all-city meets between Memorial and Labor Day. “There’s a lot of camaraderie, it’s great competition, but it’s also a great stepping-stone for kids who want to get to the next level of swimming,” she says.

Convenient everyday shopping
Locals don’t need to venture far to run errands. At the Meadowood Center shopping center, there’s everything from a Walgreens and laundromat to a bank and the Meadowridge branch of the Madison Public Library, at the corner of South Whitney Way and Raymond Road less than five minutes from home. On the east side of Orchard Ridge, there’s more shopping at the corner of West Beltline Highway and US Highway 151. The local Woodman’s Food Market is also close by, off South Gammon Road less than 10 minutes northwest.
Orchard Ridge also has access to a nearby Woodman's Grocery Store.

Quick commuting around Madison
From their home on the northwest side of the curve where the West Beltline Highway meets US Highway 151, also known as Verona Road, locals enjoy access to the surrounding metro at their fingertips. Amenities in downtown Madison, including the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW Health Hospital, are just 6 miles northeast, on the other side of Lake Wingra. The drive takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. But getting around town without a car is easy, too, with stops along the City of Madison Metro Transit bus line positioned at regular intervals along Hammersley and Raymond Roads and South Whitney Way. Many are less than a quarter-mile from most homes. “It’s very local, it’s on bus routes and there’s a transfer station right there on Whitney Way. You can also access the bike trail system, which can get you anywhere in Madison, very easily,” Romens says.
