Stone Meadows is a newer neighborhood on Madison’s southwest side, tucked between Verona and Fitchburg, two small but growing suburban cities. “It’s a great situation for families with young kids,” says Will Sierzchula, an energy analyst who has lived in the neighborhood since 2016. “It’s close to schools, it’s close to parks, it’s close to shops. There are sidewalks everywhere. Lots of kids outside playing games. And it feels okay to let kids walk to friends’ houses, which is good for increasing their independence and self-reliance.” Additionally, the neighborhood is close to major highways like U.S. Route 151 and Madison’s Beltline, providing access to jobs, dining and recreation.
Newer builds designed with families in mind
Homes in Stone Meadows tend to be newer builds, constructed mainly in the 1990s and early 2000s. “Because Stone Meadows is newer some people might like these homes a little better because they have more of a modern layout,” says Kietra Olson, Realtor with Realty Executive Cooper Spransy. Split-level homes are prominent, but additional styles include ranch-style houses and Colonial Revival designs. Large lawns and attached garages are common. “The homes are designed for families, so it makes it more convenient. At the same time, it’s very uniform. A lot of the houses are similar,” Sierzchula says. Single-family homes cost between $350,000 and $550,000. Additionally, the neighborhood is home to condos and townhomes, and the limited maintenance options run from $200,000 and $375,000.

Access to all parts of Madison and surrounding areas
The convenient location can be useful for commuters. “There’s easy access to other parts of the city or highways to other cities and towns,” Olson says. Commuting to Epic Systems, a major employer in nearby Verona, or to downtown Madison, is straightforward thanks to the neighborhood's proximity to U.S. Route 151, the Beltline Highway and McKee Road. All are major thoroughfares that head into and around Madison. Two-wheeled commuters can use the bike lanes and the Military Ridge State Trail, just south of the neighborhood. A paved bike trail also runs along McKee Road.
Neighborhood parks, unusual Epic Systems’ buildings and mountain biking
Manchester Park offers courts for basketball and volleyball as well as a paved walking trail around the pond. In Verona, Epic Systems’ campus is open for public tours, even self-guided ones, for people to explore the unusual, whimsical architecture and landscaping. “Walking around Epic is pretty spectacular. Inside or outside,” says Sierzchula. “Taking people there is usually befuddling for them. People are like, how does this place exist?” Just south of the neighborhood, Quarry Ridge Recreation Area is known for mountain biking trails with a wide range of difficulty levels. When the weather won’t cooperate, nearby indoor activities include bowling at Ten Pin Alley or catching a movie at the AMC IMAX theater.

There are several options for shopping and dining around Stone Meadows. “In our area, Quivey’s Grove has the best ambiance,” Sierzchula says. The restaurant serves dinner at their Stone House restaurant and more casual fare at their Stable Grill. For a unique Madison bar experience, Sierzchula also recommends Le Tigre Lounge, which has poured drinks near the Beltline for almost 70 years. “It is incredible,” Sierzchula says. “One, it is full of tigers. Two, you can only pay with cash. And three, there’s no swearing allowed. You absolutely have to look it up.” The neighborhood is bookended by Pick ‘N Save, Aldi, Hy-Vee and Target all along McKee Road.
