Manicured, suburban streets with access to NYC, the shore and Philadelphia
Stonehurst is filled with gently curving roads that feed into Main Street, a straight shot lined with retail. Downtown Freehold is just to the north, which helps with stacking up amenities. “Freehold is a fantastic town with great schools and shopping nearby,” says Josette McClaren, a Realtor with Weichert Realtors. “We are right in the middle of the state, so we’re about an hour to New York City, an hour to the shore and just over an hour to Philadelphia.” But while residential streetscapes do have that neatly manicured look associated with places just outside a downtown, Stonehurst is also edging toward territories in Manalapan County that are less developed. “You could say this area is suburban but mixed with rural elements,” says Alex Farlow, a real estate salesperson with Compass New Jersey.
There are a variety of houses in Stonehurst ranging from affordable to expensive.
Stonehurst is a traditional suburban town with great schools and parks.

Stonehurst's homes from the 60s, 70s and 80s neighbor new construction
It's not uncommon for homes to sit on lots that are over an acre, giving residents a degree of privacy. “One of the main drivers for people moving out here is you get more property for your money,” says Farlow. “Bigger houses and bigger yards.” Ranches, split-level homes and center-hall colonials bolster the classic suburban aspects of Stonehurst. These are from the 60s, 70s and 80s, so there are lots of tans and taupes on the wide blocky facades. Prices range from $600,000 to $900,000. Fresh homes from the 2020s are popping up in the same price range, showcasing a modern traditional aesthetic that complements the aforementioned styles, but that still stands on its own. Columned porches, stone accents and sharply gabled roofs are defining features. A few modern mansions in the $1 million to $1.2 million range are present, too. These brick properties from the early 2000s are typically over 3,000 square feet. The Raintree Community offers condos in the range of $150,000 to $400,000 and townhouses in the range of $300,000 to $500,000.
Split level houses are a common housing type within Stonehurst.
More expensive modern traditional houses make up a few Stonehurst culd-es-acs.

Global studies magnet program at Freehold Township High
Educational opportunities are another big draw. “Our high schools offer various magnet programs. If you live in the area, you can test into them,” McClaren says. Children can begin at West Freehold Elementary, which is a kindergarten through fifth grade institution. Niche gives the school a B-plus. At Clifton T. Barkalow Middle School, there’s a 9-to-1 student-teacher ratio. It, too, earns a B-plus. Freehold Township High is known for its magnet program in global studies. The school receives an A-minus.

Small parks define the outdoor recreation scene
Stonehurst is flecked with small parks, instead of having one or two large parks that everyone gravitates to. These modest spaces are embedded in residential stretches, giving each a flavor that’s influenced by immediate surroundings. For example, Greentree Park is a 3-acre space with trails for joggers and walkers, accessible by a shaded paved pathway tucked between two houses – those not in the know may overlook it. Stonehurst Park sits across the street from an elementary school, so naturally it has more traditional amenities, like a playground. This nearly 6-acre space is much more open and visible to those passing by, with a volleyball court and tennis courts in view from the sidewalk.
In warm weather, the golf course is packed with residents ready to tee off.
Stonehurst Park is a great place for parents to play with their kids.

State Route 9 and Raintree Town Center are the places to go for food
Raintree Town Center on Main offers a high concentration of retail and dining options. Livoti’s Old World Market is set up like a typical supermarket with produce and refrigerated goods, except it specializes in Italian fare, with features like an olive bar and fresh brick oven-baked pizza. Greek, Mediterranean, Thai and Japanese restaurants populate the shopping mall. The Skillet has the look of a polished diner, serving signature breakfast items in a cast iron presentation. But on the east end, there are more eateries lining state Route 9, like Tommy’s Tavern + Tap, where burgers, pizza pies and even sushi rolls are paired with craft beer.
The Skillet provides outdoor seating as well.
Raintree Town Center contains many of Freehold's local businesses.

A car is essential for getting around suburban Stonehurst
Most of Stonehurst is a maze of small streets that, while walkable due to sidewalks, don’t connect to one another in a systematic way. Residents have to head toward Main and Stillwells Corner Road, the main intersecting thoroughfares of Stonehurst, to really get anywhere. For that reason, a car is essential. But commuters and those running errands benefit from having state Routes 9 and 33 meet in the northeastern corner – this interchange allows drivers to head north to New York City or east to the beach. “Ashbury Park is one of the main destinations in this area,” says Farlow. “It has Stone Pony, which is a great music venue and multiple restaurants. It’s right on the beach with a boardwalk. There are often music festivals, like Sea Hear Now in September.”
Highways through Stonehurst lead to Newark and New York for commuters.
Route 9 is the main roadway which runs north and south directly through Freehold.

Residents can attend small weekly events and big annual events
A farmers market is held in Downtown Freehold on Fridays from July to October. And on Wednesdays from September to October, the Fall Concert Series provides a free way to experience local music. In July, the Monmouth County Fair brings droves out to the East Freehold Showgrounds. In September, Sea Hear Now in Asbury Park spans two days, presenting major musical acts like Bruce Springsteen and Norah Jones, while a surf contest is held at the beach.
