Private-feeling subdivision between interstates and downtown Manchester
The Manchester neighborhood of Waddell is sandwiched between the local businesses of downtown Manchester, major interstates and a plethora of sprawling shopping centers. In spite of this surrounding commotion, Waddell maintains a degree of privacy, thanks to forests and a gentle creek immediately to the north of the community. “It’s an area that’s kind of set off by itself, but not too far from the highways,” says Richard Yaconiello, Realtor with Cornerstone Real Estate who has been selling homes for 18 years. “It’s very good for families – it’s nice and private with quiet streets for children to ride their bikes and take walks with the family. In that sense, it’s not like downtown where there’s a lot of vehicle activity.” Vincent Diana, a former resident of Manchester, agrees. “It's a nice, community-oriented neighborhood,” says Diana, an Associate Broker at William Raveis Real Estate who has been selling properties for 30 years. “You have a mix of lifers and people who are buying their first home here.”
Detached homes and townhouses
Lawns in Waddell tend to be well-maintained and occasionally decorated with small gardens and manicured shrubs. Residential streets are wide, quiet and usually accompanied by sidewalks on at least one side. Homes and lots are sometimes shaded by mature trees. Most construction years fall on a spectrum from the 1940s to the 1960s, but there are some comparatively new builds from the ‘90s and more historic ones from the ‘20s. Detached homes tend to follow Colonial Revival, Cape Cod, ranch-style and raised ranch-style designs, with prices ranging between $200,000 and $300,000. Townhouses can be found on the east and west sides of Waddell, most having two bedrooms. Their prices fall between $175,000 and $250,000.
Waddell is home to a large number of compact capes on small lots.
While most homes in Waddell are freestanding there are some townhouse condo complexes.

Manchester High School is home to 1,700 students in 9th through 12th grade.
Illing Middle School is home to 852 Manchester students in grades 6 - 8.

Waddell is by the crossroads of Manchester
Although CT Transit bus routes like 88 and 91 pass by Waddell’s periphery, most residents prefer driving and take advantage of Waddell’s proximity to major highways. Interstates 84, 291 and 384 are all within 3 miles of most homes. Many major employers, particularly insurance companies such as Aetna and Cigna, are headquartered in Downtown Hartford, which is only about 8 miles west via I-84. Manchester Memorial Hospital is within a 3-mile drive of all residences.
Outdoor fun at Wickham Park
Wickham Park is just down U.S. Highway 44 and offers an aviary, nature center, numerous playgrounds and a disc golf course. One of the park’s biggest attractions is its gardens, which include a lotus garden, an English garden and a sensory garden. A few nature trails are within walking distance of homes, including the Adams Mill Trail which follows the gentle Hockanum River and passes by the ruins of an old mill. Farther up the Hockanum River is Union Pond Park, a popular spot for fishers that’s accompanied by additional trails. A few sports fields are close to Waddell such as Carl Silver Field for softball and Leber Field for baseball. Downtown Manchester’s Center Springs Park invites residents to play nine holes of frisbee golf or to enjoy a picnic by the pond.

A sprawling shopping mall and unique local businesses
Shopping centers with big-box stores such as Walmart, Costco and Aldi can be found north of Interstate 84. The Shoppes at Buckland Hills is a two-story mall with over 100 specialty shops, a food court and a circus-themed carousel. There’s also Woodland Gardens on the east side of the neighborhood, a 5-acre shop with a variety of gardening supplies as well as various trees and flowers. Local eating establishments can be found through Downtown Manchester. Mulberry Street Pizza is one highlight, beloved for its cordial atmosphere as much as its thin-crust pizza. “Everyone knows you there and knows each other,” Diana says. “Walking in, it's like you're the mayor of the town.” Shady Glen might be on the opposite side of town, but for Yaconiello, their delicious burgers make the trip worth it. Yaconiello isn’t the only person who feels this way; in 2012, the James Beard Foundation named the diner an “American Classic.” The restaurant is particularly popular for its homemade ice cream and “winged” cheeseburgers. When residents are in the mood for special events and socializing over some craft beers, they look no farther than Elicit Brewing Company. From weekly trivia nights and performances by the Hartford Jazz Orchestra to comedy shows and speed dating, their calendar is chock-full of activities.
Waddell has plenty of retail options nearby.

Running for a good cause
Manchester holds the 4.7-mile Manchester Road Race every Thanksgiving morning. Proceeds go to local charities and towards researching a cure for muscular dystrophy. The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
