Southeast Manchester homes near Crystal Lake
Lower South Willow is a small neighborhood southeast of downtown Manchester, bordered by Interstate 93, Interstate 293 and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. “This area is away from downtown. It’s a great neighborhood. It’s on the outskirts,” says Doreen Berendes, Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty. “But in five minutes, you’re in South Willow, and everything is on that main drag. Shopping, the mall, and grocery.” Half of the neighborhood is home to the Mall of New Hampshire and its surrounding shops, restaurants and heavy traffic. The other half is made up of winding streets shaded by tall New Hampshire pines. Crystal Lake is a natural pond with a few private residences and a public park. “You’re just a hop and skip to get out the highway; 93 is right there,” says Berendes. This proximity to Interstate 93 makes it convenient for drivers to commute up to Manchester or long drives down to Nashua or Boston. Residential areas are growing, with several new constructions being built on former forested land. Students study close by in Green Acres to the north, beyond Interstate 293.
Residents can enjoy Crystal Lake just steps away from their home.

New and cozy developments near Crystal Lake
Whether moving into a new housing development or settling down on the shores of Crystal Lake, prospective homebuyers have a choice in lifestyle. “It’s a lot of mixed housing over there. There’s a huge development,” says Berendes. “A lot of colonials. Around the lake, there are cottages where people live year-round.” Limited lakeside homes on private docks are where anglers cast their lines on a quiet afternoon. These homes often have nautical aesthetics, like wide bay windows, mounted oars and bright white or colorful exteriors. These residences often cost between $350,000 and $600,000, depending on their size and amount of waterfront. There are several mid-2000s single-family homes and detached condos tucked away on streets surrounded by tall pine trees, creating many new housing developments in the area. Houses range from new traditional to contemporary builds with Craftsman or classical-inspired features, such as cross-gabled roofs or symmetrical exteriors. These newer homes can cost between $450,000 and $700,000. Manufactured homes near Crystal Lake on Thistle Way Road are on tightly packed lots and often run from $120,000 to $350,000.

Crystal Lake Park and Indoor attractions near the New Hampshire Mall
Crystal Lake is a natural pond that was once called Mosquito Pond. According to New Hampshire Magazine, local legend has it that in the 1840s, the pond was once home to Charles Alan Lambert, also known as the Hermit of Mosquito Pond. Today, Crystal Lake Park has a sandy beach and playground, as well as picnic spots – though there is no grilling allowed – and a raised pavilion and bathhouse. Anglers can take kayaks or canoes out on the water to fish for small and largemouth bass, brown bullhead or black crappie. Indoor attractions by the Mall of New Hampshire include a Dave and Busters and LOK’d! Room Escape. Cowabunga’s Indoor Kids Play and Party Center has giant bounce houses, jungle gyms and slides. Next door is Chunky’s Cinema and Pub, a large movie theater that serves food.

Mall of New Hampshire and both local and chain restaurants
Just off South Willow Street is the Mall of New Hampshire, which has dozens of familiar chain stores and department stores like JCPenney, Express and Hollister. “The Mall of New Hampshire is the big mall in New Hampshire,” says Berendes. “The Merrimack Outlets is 15 minutes away.” Surrounding the mall are several chain restaurants like Olive Garden and Texas Roadhouse, as well as new and used car dealerships, Barnes & Noble and furniture stores. Backyard Brewery and Kitchen is a from-scratch spot that brews its own beer and serves pizza, prime rib and soup in a sports bar atmosphere. For those who like to garden, Demers Garden Center Inc. is on Mammoth Road and sells an assortment of outdoor decor, plants and lawn care tools and supplies. Nearby grocery options include Hannaford, Aldi and a Walmart Supercenter.

Blocks from Interstate 93
Though most people drive in the residential parts of Lower South Willow, there are several Manchester Travel Authority bus stops along Harvey Road and Perimeter Road, near the shops and airport. Though the airport can be noisy, Lower South Willow residents are only a 5-mile drive from departures via Perimeter Road. Those working in Manchester can commute about 5 miles north to downtown via South Mammoth Road, and it is about 20 miles south to Nashua via the Everett Turnpike. Boston is about 50 miles south via Interstate 93, the area’s major thoroughfare, and can be reached in about two hours depending on the level of traffic, which can get congested. “You’re just a hop and skip to get out the highway; 93 is right there,” says Berendes.
Possible noise from the nearby Manchester-Boston Regional Airport
The southwest side of the neighborhood shares space with the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, so many neighborhood developments are on the eastern side closer to Interstate 93 – which can also be noisy during the day. Those living near the airport or on Willow Street may experience the high volume of traffic noise, airplanes taking off or the bustle of many businesses and industrial warehouses out that way.
