The Sainte Marie Roman Catholic Church dominates the skyline in Notre Dame, Manchester.
Notre Dame’s historic character
In Manchester’s West Side, Notre Dame has a rich history. “The West Side of Manchester and specifically Notre Dame used to be the French side of the city,” says Kyle Valliere, owner of KV Construction and local investor. “French Canadians would come down for work in the old factories and mills along the river.” Named for the church within its bounds, Notre Dame is a more diverse neighborhood than it once was, but still has its historic residential charm while being close to the employment and entertainment of downtown.

Triple-decker apartment buildings and some single-family
Crossing the Merrimack River from downtown Manchester, residents head up a gently sloped hill into Notre Dame. The urban, sidewalk-lined streets are flanked by three-story apartment buildings, many of which were built in the early 20th century. These saltbox and Queen Anne-style buildings make up most of the housing inventory in the neighborhood. Rent here has been rising, as the population of Manchester grows without the supply to meet the demand, but is still more affordable than downtown. Single-family Cape Cod homes mix with the multifamily buildings towards the west side of the neighborhood, generally selling in the mid- to upper-$300,000s. Meanwhile, the Valley West condo development is tucked away in Notre Dame, with prices ranging between the upper $200,000s and mid-$300,000s.

Neighborhood businesses and downtown dining
Given Notre Dame’s quiet residential nature, a few small markets and restaurants make up the extent of the neighborhood’s shopping and dining scene. Most of the businesses in West Side are on Kelley Street, just north of Notre Dame. “On Kelley Street, they have a few neighborhood spots, like Chez Vachon for breakfast,” Valliere says. “But for the most part, people go across the bridge to Elm Street in downtown to go out to eat.” Also across the Merrimack River is Market Basket, a family-owned grocery store that most residents frequent.
Manchester sports and events
Despite the West Side’s history, residents of Notre Dame head over the bridge into downtown for any entertainment. “There’s a lot going on in downtown, and it’s incredibly easy to get there,” Valliere says. SNHU Arena hosts concerts and sporting events, and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats play just across the river at Delta Dental Stadium. The closest event to the neighborhood is Manchester’s Fourth of July fireworks, which are set off just across the Notre Dame Bridge in Arms Park.

They can then move on to Manchester High School West, which received a C grade. West was ranked the second-most diverse public high school in New Hampshire. Holy Family Academy also calls the neighborhood home, for those looking for a private option. The seventh- through twelfth-grade school was rated an A-minus by Niche.

Recreation along the Piscataquog River
The trees and lawns throughout the neighborhood, especially the western half, mean there will always be a vibrant green throughout the spring and summer months. But for those looking for a little more space to enjoy the outdoors, Notre Dame residents can bike the Piscataquog Trail, which follows its namesake river to its end, emptying into the Merrimack. Simpson Park and Lafayette Park, bumping up against each other, give residents the chance to get outside and go for a quick walk. Simpson Park’s playground gives kids three slides to choose from as well as a small, shaded seating section for parents.
Convenience to Catholic Medical Center and downtown
Notre Dame is located just across the Merrimack River from downtown Manchester, but some residents of the neighborhood won’t have to go even that far for work. The Catholic Medical Center, on the east side of the area, employs many residents and is an easy walk from anywhere in the neighborhood. Manchester Transit offers a bus system for those looking to head downtown or to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which serves destinations along the East Coast. For longer flights, Boston Logan International Airport is an hour away.
