Tiny residential area in the heart of Manchester

Somerville is a small, rectangular residential neighborhood just south of downtown Manchester. It’s urban, with cracked streets and sidewalks, tall telephone poles with visible wires and the occasional business squeezed into a residential street next to early 20th-century multifamily houses. Locals park on the streets or in driveways protected by chain-link fences. Somerville is directly west of Mammoth Road, a major Manchester thoroughfare. The areas near Mammoth Road tend to be the more desirable parts of downtown, says Realtor Cody Barna of eXp Realty.

Three-deckers, Cape Cods and bungalows

Somerville is dominated by early-to-mid 20th-century New England architecture. Three-decker homes, built to house mill workers in the early 1900s, exist today as multifamily properties. Cape Cods, ranch-style houses, townhouses and vinyl-sided colonials sit on the packed residential streets of Somerville. Houses generally sit right next to each other. Three-deckers sit directly behind the sidewalk, while some neighborhood Cape Cods and bungalows have small front lawns. Home prices range between $220,000 and $470,000. Property taxes in New Hampshire are high; the state’s median annual property tax payment is $6,097. “Near Cilley Road and north there are a lot of multifamily houses, but as you go south closer to the airport there are going to be more and more single-family homes,” says Barna.

Vegan food and Mexican restaurants

Somerville is mostly homes, but it does have some restaurants, including the Green Beautiful, a gourmet vegan café. Everything is plant-based and made from scratch here, including Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and macaroni and cheese. The inside of the restaurant is cozy, with a pink couch, floral textures on the walls and pale sage green trim. Mexican food is served around the corner at El Tenampa, a popular sit-down restaurant serving nachos and Pacifico. People start their days at the Breakfast Club, a nearby brunch eatery in a casual environment with wooden floors. Tacos and empanadas are for sale at Taqueria y Pastelitos, a popular takeout spot. Chain restaurants like Dunkin, retailers like Family Dollar and grocery stores like Aldi and Hannaford are minutes away. Elliot Hospital, one of Manchester’s major healthcare centers, sits just north of Somerville, and the Mall of New Hampshire is about 5 minutes away.
