Shops and New England homes south of Manchester

Southside is a residential area just on the cusp of South Willow Street's major shopping centers and The Mall of New Hampshire. New England homes like Cape Cods and refurbished farmhouses mingle with condo and townhouse communities. Students study close by and can walk or bike to school from most homes. Southside benefits from fast access to South Willow Street and Interstate 293, allowing commuters to head north to downtown Manchester or west to Route 3, which will then take them toward either Nashua or Concord. With dozens of things to do, such as attending showings at the nearby movie theater or puzzling out escape rooms, those living in Southside don't have to go far for entertainment. But if they are looking for a night out on the town, downtown Manchester with all its shops, bars and restaurants is less than 3 miles north.

A combination of modern and historic New England homes

“As far as homes go, it’s not going be anything extravagant,” says Cody Barna, a Realtor with eXp Realty who has lived in Manchester for most of his life. “It’s a traditional neighborhood where you have three beds, two baths and 1,500 square feet. The houses are packed in.” This variety of Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and refurbished farmhouses creates an eclectic landscape, where both small and large families can find what best suits them. Smaller residences such as Cape Cods may cost between $250,000 and $400,000. Larger homes like Colonial-inspired or modern traditional builds often run between $450,000 and $650,000. “In that area, you see people out there walking their dogs, but it’s not walkable in the sense that you would walk from your home to South Willow Street,” he says. “You don’t see a lot of people walking around in that particular area.” There is a collection of condo communities near the middle and high schools out on Weston Road. Buyers can select from larger townhouse units with backyard patios, or smaller units in tight-knit buildings overtop single-car garages. Prices can range from $250,000 to $500,000, depending on the number of rooms and community in question.

Shopping centers and chain restaurants along South Willow Street

The major shopping centers off South Willow Street are big draws for Southside. Shoppers will find familiar retailers like The Home Depot and T. J. Maxx, as well as popular car and motorcycle dealerships like Harley Davidson and Mercedes Benz. They can head to the Revo Casino to place a bet or to stop at any number of the chain restaurants nearby, such as Panera Bread or Starbucks. Just south of Interstate 293 is The Mall of New Hampshire, which offers more options for both shopping and entertainment. There’s the LOK'd! Escape Room and Chunky’s Cinema Pub movie theater, which serves food to viewers in its theaters. Locals can grocery shop at places like Aldi, Walmart and Hannaford. Though most of Southside is known for its shopping centers, it is also not too far from Manchester’s lively downtown. Elm Street area is a great place to eat a meal or sip a drink. Diners can grab a glass of wine or a whiskey at The Foundry or have some ceviche and a plate of paella at XO Bistro. “If nightlife is more your thing, downtown also has plenty of bars,” Barna says.

Parks, ponds and Little League teams

In the middle of the Southside, folks might stumble upon St. Anthony’s Park, a community green space that “you wouldn’t even know was there unless you randomly found it,” Barna says. Tucked between a few acres of trees, the park has two ballfields and lots of space for a soccer game. Manchester Little League teams play ball at Precourt Park on Nutt Pond. The pond has a small boat launch for anglers and kayakers looking to spend a day on the water. Next door is the Jerry Fortin soccer field for pickup games and after-school leagues.

Navigating Manchester and commutes to Boston

Living in Southside means being close to major highways and amenities. Drivers can take South Willow Street less than 3 miles north to reach downtown Manchester, or they can head a few miles south to access the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. If they commute into Boston, they can head east to reach the Everitt Turnpike, also known as Route 3, which is about a 60-mile drive. If they take Interstate 93, drivers will be able to shave off 10 miles and save about 20 minutes.
