Despite its small footprint of just nine square blocks, the Meatpacking District is one of New York City’s most dynamic neighborhoods. Sandwiched between the West Village and Chelsea, it was dominated by meatpacking warehouses until the mid-2000s, when the first stretch of the High Line began transforming the area. Today, its cobblestone streets are packed with posh restaurants and clubs and luxury boutiques—anchored by the Whitney Museum of American Art. “It’s really become an upscale neighborhood, yet it’s still down to earth,” says Lydia Sussex, licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman. “It’s the best of old meets new.”

Shopping at Gucci, dining at Pastis
The Meatpacking District’s cobblestone streets are a shopping destination by day and by night, a place where fashionable folks gather. High-end boutiques include Gucci, Rolex and Diane von Furstenberg, the first designer to make her way to the once-industrial enclave. Upmarket chains like Sephora and Apple, whose monolithic retail store opened in 2007, are here too. But the district really comes alive at night, with hotspots like the RH Rooftop Restaurant with its skylit garden, fountains, trees and chandeliers. The legendary bistro Pastis still draws crowds, as does The Old Homestead Steakhouse, which has been in business since 1868. Newer, more wallet-friendly dining options include an outpost of Shake Shack. For groceries, in the nearby West Village, there’s D’Agostino or Chelsea Market for bread, imported cheeses and charcuterie.
The High Line and Little Island draw locals and visitors alike
At the neighborhood's southern end begins the 1.5-mile stretch of the High Line, an elevated park on a former railroad track that extends north through Chelsea. Bikers and joggers can take advantage of the Hudson River Greenway, which runs along the West Side Highway. The Gansevoort Peninsula features a sandy beachfront outfitted with picnic tables, market umbrellas and Adirondack chairs. The concrete marvel, Little Island, is always lush with seasonal plantings from flowering trees to evergreens. It doubles as a performance space with a 687-seat amphitheater, which residents and visitors can enjoy in the warmer months.
Available homes are hard to come by but not in neighboring Chelsea and West Village
With its small footprint and landmark status restrictions that translate to three- to four-story buildings, the Meatpacking District’s home inventory is limited—sometimes as low as just a few properties. What does come on the market are typically condos in luxury buildings in neighboring West Village and Chelsea.
Four major subway lines serve the neighborhood
The Meatpacking District is easily accessible by both express and local trains with the A, C, E and L at 8th Avenue and 14th Street.
