Finding joy in a milkshake

Manlius Town and Manlius Village are not one and the same, though the area in its entirety is rather historic. Centuries-old homes complement locally-owned businesses and the classic Manlius Cinema, a well-loved landmark. Whether it’s grabbing a milkshake from The Daily Diner or taking a walk along the Limestone Creek Greenway Trail, there’s a sort of joy that locals can discover in the little things here.

Historic homes in Manlius Village

Cruising down the two-lane streets of Manlius Village, it’s not uncommon to spot elegant, antique homes resting on small hilltops or shaded behind old-growth trees. Established in the late 18th century, Manlius’ older homes are practically historic landmarks. These Stick Victorians and Colonial Revivals were constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, while more common ranch-style homes, split levels and Craftsman homes tend to be recent builds. New construction also looks like townhomes with traditional architecture and larger ranch-style homes with Tudor flourishes, priced between $200,000 and $650,000. More spacious builds may even reach $1 million, though land is often available for folks looking to start from scratch.

12 miles east of The Salt City

Route 92, Fayette Street, leads locals to the heart of Syracuse just 12 miles west. The highway passes through Fayetteville, a nearby hub sharing Manlius’ school district, and Cazenovia, another historic village and the namesake of a nearby 1,500-acre lake. Seneca Street is the beating heart of Manlius Village, a thoroughfare cutting through the village center and providing an array of shopping and dining options, as well as stops for New York’s Centro bus system. Residents, however, remain largely car-dependent. Regarding airfare, the town is just over 18 miles from Syracuse Hancock International and 57 miles north of Ithaca Tompkins International Airport. Fayetteville’s Medical Center is 2 miles northwest.

From rustic to whimsical on Seneca Street

Seneca Street has no shortage of restaurants and dives to choose from, but Kay Blythe, the Deputy Town Manager of Manlius, recommends The Daily Diner. “They’re perfect for brunch,” she dotes. “The atmosphere is classic, and the milkshakes are incredible!” Café 119 is a family-owned spot with a rustic interior, while Mrs. Kelder’s Cakes has a whimsical feel, serving custom desserts and cupcakes from the case. Nearby, locals can grocery shop at Tops Friendly Markets or head 4 miles up the road to Towne Center at Fayetteville, offering a Target, TJ Maxx and other commercial retail spots. Local shops and pharmacies are found along the way.

Recreation at Mill Run Park

“Manlius Village is home to Mill Run Park,” Blythe explains. “It’s popular with locals from the village and Fayetteville residents, but Fayetteville itself also has a few lovely green spots.” Mill Run Park encourages hiking and biking along the Limestone Creek Greenway Trail. Folks can play a pick-up game on the baseball field or volleyball court while kids run wild on the playground. About 5 miles north, Fayetteville’s Green Lakes State Park features the Green Lakes Perimeter Trail, as well as areas for fishing, boating, hunting and disc golf. The Cavalry Golf Club is just off Troop K Road, an 18-hole course with a club pool and banquet events. Though folks can also join the Woodcrest Golf Club, a scenic spot overlooking Oneida Lake, closer to Chittenango.

The Manlius Cinema

The Manlius Cinema is a well-loved gem in the village. The historic, one-room theater stands out on Seneca Street for its gothic, black brick exterior. Showing new releases, classic and independent films, it’s a go-to spot for residents looking for a novelty close to home. Over the summer, folks can look forward to the Summer Concert Series at Fire Auxiliary. But Syracuse offers a wide variety of events year-round, including the Syracuse Arts and Crafts Festival, Strawberry Festival and St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
