Pumpkintown is home to the Pumpkintown Pumpkin Festival
Settled in the late 1700s, Pumpkintown was named for the wealth of wild pumpkins that grew in the area. This small South Carolina community, about 20 miles northwest of Greenville, has retained its native feel. As residents drive along Pumpkintown Highway, they are greeted by dense woods and rolling hills, with only the occasional mailbox and driveway interrupting the scenery. With Table Rock State Park along the western edge and Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area to the north, Pumpkintown serves as a bridge between preserved land and forests. “Pumpkintown is very remote, more remote than Dacusville,” says Melissa Hall, a Realtor with Allen Tate Realtors and a longtime resident of Pickens County. But every October, this secluded area transforms as more than 35,000 visitors come for the annual Pumpkintown Pumpkin Festival. “The festival is about all that the community is known for,” says Dan Bracken, president of Bracken Real Estate, who’s been selling homes in the area for 25 years. “People come from all over the state to go to that.”

Pumpkintown homes offer plenty of land
Homes in the community rest on multi-acre, wooded lots. Because few houses sit along the road’s edge, greenery offers a veil of privacy and surrounds homes with views of the area’s native oak and evergreen trees. Though log cabins are the dominant style and add a rustic feel to the community, other homes feature modern architecture and boast large front porches and panoramic views. While a two-bedroom home from the 1960s can start as low as $125,000, most homes sell for at least $300,000, with price largely dependent on property size. A two-bedroom house on 2 acres might cost $345,000 and a three-bedroom home on more than 5 acres can extend up to $580,000.
Pumpkintown has an overall crime score of 1 out of 10, according to the CAP Index Crime Score, significantly lower than the national average of 4.

Locals enjoy the outdoors at Table Rock State Park
Table Rock State Park, in the western portion of the community, is home to Pinnacle Mountain, the tallest mountain in the state. The park features 12 miles of trails and two lakes. It’s also an entry point to the Foothills Trail, a hiking path with over 75 miles of mountainside views. Less than 15 miles northeast of Table Rock, Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area borders Pumpkintown. With over 10,000 acres of green space, Mountain Bridge allows locals to hike to waterfalls, rock climb or go birdwatching throughout the year. “Aesthetically, it’s one of the prettiest areas in the upstate of South Carolina,” Bracken says. “The mountains and lakes are a big draw.”
