Gateway to up-island Martha's Vineyard
West Tisbury is the gateway to up-island, the part of Martha’s Vineyard where deer cross the winding rural streets and locals trek through the massive state forest. Straddling the line between lively down-island towns like Edgartown and hilly, deep country communities like Chilmark and Aquinnah, West Tisbury is an east-west link to the rest of the island. In this bucolic community, massive colonials and gray-shingled houses sit on grassy multi-acre lots with fire pits and Adirondack chairs, 1800s farmhouses overlook a freshwater pond and people come out every August to ride the Ferris wheel and eat fried dough at the country fair.

Martha's Vineyard Land Bank conserves island land
Life in West Tisbury synchronizes perfectly with nature. The town has a chunk of the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, which spans 5,300 acres in the heart of Martha’s Vineyard. Locals ride bikes on the paved pathway, hike through the woods and ride their horses in this massive public park. Unlike other beach communities with unrestricted development, Martha's Vineyard is a haven for land preservation. This is made possible through the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank, which purchases land to conserve it. The Land Bank is funded by a 2% surcharge on most island real estate purchases. “There are big chunks of the island that will never be built on,” says Win Baker, vice president of operations at Point B Realty in Edgartown. “There are lots of hiking and walking trails.” Trees, shrubs and flowers like azaleas grow at the Polly Hill Arboretum, open year-round, and Middle Road Sanctuary has steep, rocky hiking trails through valleys that lead to sweeping views of ponds. Kids learn to ride horses at Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center, which offers a seven-week horsemanship class for children during the summers.
Waves crash into the shore at Long Point Beach, a public beach on the south side of West Tisbury. South beaches are known for their big, crashing waves – the Vineyard’s best surfing happens at Squibnocket Beach in nearby Chilmark. On the opposite side of the island, hugging the Vineyard Sound and looking out at Cape Cod, is Lambert’s Cove Beach, where the water is still. “The Vineyard Sound is all calm water,” says Baker. Lambert’s Cove is open to West Tisbury residents and requires a parking sticker. Dogs can walk on the beach in the summertime before 10 a.m.

Old fashioned country fair
Every year in August, islanders and vacationers come to the West Tisbury Agricultural Hall for the Martha’s Vineyard Fair. It’s a traditional agricultural fair with livestock shows, horse pulls and carnival rides over four days. The fair signals the end of summer for many islanders. Locals check out the prized fruits and vegetables and eat pulled pork sandwiches.
Gray-shingled houses on grassy lots of land
Houses in West Tisbury tend to sit on at least an acre of grassy land, down a private driveway or hidden from the road by trees. The freshwater Tisbury Great Pond has several surrounding streets where residents can easily launch boats or kayaks into the water. “There are lots of little communities and houses around the ponds,” says Baker. Gray-shingled houses with detached barns can cost $3.2 million, 1,500-square-foot Cape Cods from the 1990s can go for $1.5 million and colonials with docks on the pond can cost $2.3 million. Home prices in West Tisbury range from $990,000 to $20 million. The town’s property tax rate is $4.30, the third lowest on the island behind Chilmark and Edgartown.

Charming West Tisbury downtown district
West Tisbury has a small downtown district near the intersection of State Road and Edgartown-West Tisbury Road. Gray-shingled buildings house a free public library and town hall, and the West Tisbury Inn bed and breakfast has a blooming floral garden out front. Alley’s General Store, the oldest retail business on the island, refers to its expertise as “dealers in almost everything.” Alley’s has drinks, pantry staples, cheese and newspapers, and customers can play games together on the porch. The West Tisbury Free Public Library has a selection of books, plus classes in yoga and acrylic painting.

West Tisbury is 15-20 minutes from everything
West Tisbury is centrally located on the island, roughly 15-20 minutes from all three down-island towns, 10 minutes from Chilmark and 20 minutes from the Aquinnah Cliffs Overlook. Martha’s Vineyard Airport straddles the line between West Tisbury and Edgartown. Cape Air flies people on and off the island year-round, and during season, large carriers like JetBlue and American Airlines offer service to Charlotte and New York.
