Midcentury housing among swathes of green space
There may be no consensus on whether it’s Hidden Valley or Hidden Lakes, but whichever name people use, it’s the same nature-filled neighborhood in southeast Martinez. The community is close to the Mount Diablo foothills, giving the area a gently hilly landscape. There are numerous hiking and biking trails, and some students walk to the neighborhood’s centrally located elementary school. “It has really good access to Highway 680, Highway 4 and Highway 24. And then it’s got good schools, including College Park High School. It’s very family-oriented,” says Jennifer Griessel, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway with over 30 years of experience. “Sports are going on every weekend. In California, you have year-round nice weather, so the park is busy year-round.”
Once a gold rush town, the city of Martinez soon became industrial, with several oil processing centers. One such refinery still operates near Hidden Valley. Contra Costa County is another major area employer, and the Juvenile Hall, Sheriff Department and other municipal buildings sit near the community’s northern boundary.

Ranch-style homes on winding residential roads
Hidden Valley is divided into a residential upper half and a lower half of parkland. Nevertheless, many homes in both sections have views of the surrounding Mount Diablo foothills. Housing here was primarily built in the 1960s and ‘70s, and ranch-style homes surround tree-dotted cul-de-sacs. There’s also more recent construction, with townhouses near the Contra Costa County Sherrif Department and a handful of neo-Craftsman-style homes. The neighborhood’s streets wind and curve without a regular pattern, creating oddly shaped blocks. Homes sell for a median price of $750,000 after around 25 days. Single-family homes range from $600,000 to $1.2 million, while townhouses range from $500,000 to $800,000.

Multiple major roadways, nearby BART stations and traffic noise
Hidden Valley has biking lanes on its major streets and sidewalks through most of the residential areas. However, most errands still have to be done by driving. Luckily, there are plenty of roadways to choose from. John Muir Parkway, also called Highway 4, serves as the neighborhood’s northern border, passes through towns like Pittsburg and ends by merging with Interstate 80 near Pinole. Morello and Center Avenues and Chilpancingo Parkway are heavily traveled and connect to Interstate 680. Limited bus routes make getting the 6 miles to downtown Martinez or to the Concord and North Concord BART stations accessible. Buchanan Field Airport is nearby, and there is some noise from planes landing and taking off, along with traffic noise from the parkways. The neighborhood is 1.5 miles from Fresenius Medical Care at Kaiser Martinez, 30 miles from Oakland International Airport and 35 miles from San Francisco.
