Tiger Pride runs deep in East Brookfield
A mile west of Massillon's city center, East Brookfield is a small neighborhood part of "Tiger Town," where the entire community takes great pride in the dominant high school football team. Dayna Edwards, a team leader with EXP Realty who lives in East Brookfield, has witnessed just how much the community rallies around the Massillon Tigers, and it all starts on day one.
"They would pass out miniature footballs to every baby boy born at Massillon Hospital," says Edwards. "It was a long tradition that started in the 1950s until it closed a few years ago." Though the hospital is gone, the team's booster club continues to keep the tradition alive. This isn't just "Tiger Town" though. The neighborhood is also split into another school district, which excels in the academic department. Along with exceptional school sports and education, this suburban neighborhood's location is within arm's reach of Massillon's city amenities and Stark County's countryside farms with fun seasonal events.
"We're close to my office downtown, and we're about 10 miles from Amish Country, so it can get rural pretty fast," Edwards said.
A tale of two school districts: Massilon and Tuslaw
Students who live north of Millersburg Road are zoned to Massillon City Schools, while the Tuslaw Local School District serves the south side. Massillon students will attend Gorrell Elementary, which gets a C-plus grade from Niche, until 2025, when a new elementary school is expected to be built. From there, students go on to Massillon Intermediate and Massillon Junior High, both graded a B-minus. They'll finish their degrees at B-minus-graded Massillon Washington High, home of the powerhouse Tigers football team, which has made it to the Division II state championship four times from 2018 to 2023, taking home the victory in 2023. "They have an indoor football facility," says Edwards. "I mean, it's like a D1 college equivalent. Even as far as the concessions. You're not just getting hot dogs. There's a Chick-fil-A stand. It's just so next level." Those zoned for Tuslaw may attend B-plus-graded Tuslaw Elementary and A-minus-graded Tuslaw Middle. All students go on to Tuslaw High, which gets an 8 out of 10 score on GreatSchools and a B-grade from Niche, which rates it for having the best teachers out of 19 high schools in Stark County.
A wide range of events all year
In anticipation of football season, residents throw support rallies and join the booster club every year. Before each game, Tigers fans throw tailgating parties throughout the city. After the Tigers won the 2023 state championship, the town celebrated downtown with a parade. The downtown area also hosts numerous festivals every year. One of the biggest community events is the Fun Fest, a lively street festival with movie screenings, train rides, bounce houses and much more. In the nearby countryside, Nickajack Farms hosts Summer Farm Fun Days and Pumpkin Days, an annual festival that kicks off the fall season with fun activities like pumpkin bowling, a corn maze and wagon rides. Also out in the country, Clay's Resort Jellystone Park puts on big country music festivals every year, featuring stars like Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert and Luke Bryan.
Newer homes alongside century-old examples
East Brookfield's houses were built from the early 1920s to the present day on quarter-acre lots. Older homes typically feature ranch-style and Colonial Revival architecture and are located in subdivisions with big trees and narrow streets with no sidewalks. These homes generally range from $150,000 to $250,000. Newer developments tend to be in areas zoned to Tuslaw schools and feature two-story, new traditional houses on manicured lawns, ranging from $250,000 to $350,000.

Plenty of places to play
Massillon Community Park draws kids and parents to the baseball and softball fields for little league games. There's also a playground and basketball courts for them to enjoy. Wampler Park offers another playground, ball fields, and a synthetic ice skating rink that is open for free during the winter months. Disc golfers can hit the 21-hole course at Lincoln Park. It's also a popular spot to explore nature with the densely wooded Sippo Valley Trail, which follows Sippo Creek about 1 mile east to downtown and heads 8 miles west to the village of Dalton.
Residents of East Brookfield enjoy the convenient location of the Main Avenue Market.
Popular eateries are in more rural areas
Mayflower Plaza Shopping Center is located on Lincoln Way, the neighborhood's main thoroughfare. That's where locals can shop at Buehler's Fresh Foods and Family Dollar for groceries and home essentials. For a quick snack, people will head to Main Avenue Market, which shows its Tiger pride with a "Welcome To Tiger Town" sign out front. Some of the most popular restaurants are in the more rural areas, including Bison Street Burgers, a gastropub with a covered outdoor patio, known for its Titan Pretzel. Right next door, Cherry Road Winery offers a relaxing atmosphere surrounded by greenery, often featuring food trucks and live music. Back on Lincoln Way are a few regional chain pizza restaurants and Twistee Treat West, a popular ice cream shop shaped like a giant ice cream cone offering 24 soft-serve flavors.
Avoid the traffic, take a SARTA bus
Massillon's SARTA bus has stops in the neighborhood for access to all of Massillon, including Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. "There are buses that pick you up in East Brookfield and will transport you to the games because the roads just get so congested," Edwards says. State Routes 241, 21 and 172 run through the neighborhood, providing a convenient commute to surrounding Ohio. A drive to Cleveland is about 50 miles via Route 21. The closest airport is Akron-Canton Airport, about 15 miles north via Route 241.
