Growing in popularity
Located in western Canton's outskirts, West Brookfield is experiencing a surge in popularity of late, attracting builders and residents alike with spacious properties and varied home styles. Realtor Jacob Ketler from Cutler Real Estate said education seems to be the prime mover, but there's something more. “The big draw is the Tuslaw school district, and people want the city proximity with more open space and larger lots,” he said.

Tuslaw School District a big draw
The Tuslaw Local School District, which operates four schools from elementary grades to a vocational-technical center, draws an overall B grade from Niche as the seventh best in Stark County. Teachers get an A grade from the ranking service. Tuslaw Elementary, graded a B plus, is for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and the district works with 11 others to operate a preschool/early learning center. Tuslaw Middle School was recently ranked in the nation's top 10% by U.S. News and World Report and was graded an A-minus by Niche. Tuslaw High, graded B by Niche, graduates 96% of its students, above the state average of 87%, and test scores typically beat the state averages. R.G. Drage Career Center is the local tech school for students who want to explore trade options in culinary, dental, engineering or veterinary fields.
"Education here is of higher quality than that in the city,” Ketler explains.

Green spaces and housing options
Open spaces and farmland intersperse with residential areas, a noticeable shift from the adjoining and more densely developed community of East Brookfield. Older houses in enclaves to the east range from bungalows to single-family Colonial Revival homes. Established trees, narrow roads and gravel driveways give the area a rural feel. Depending on size, these houses cost between $150,000 and $350,000. Homes built in the 21st century tend to be closer to the schools, in the neighborhood's northwestern corner. Many new houses are one or two-story residences with three to five bedrooms. In newer developments, custom homes cost between $350,000 and $500,000. Rolling Hills Village is a mobile home community located on a cashew-shaped loop street called Rolling Hills Road. Homes here average about 1,000 square feet and are priced between $25,000 and $75,000.
Farms and new developments are found throughout West Brookfield.

Parks, animal therapy and golf
Though green space isn't a rare sight in West Brookfield, public access to it can be. Wampler Park, about 2 miles away in neighboring East Brookfield, includes such recreational options as a baseball field and basketball and tennis courts, ready for weekend games. Lincoln Park is a similar distance, offering as a centerpiece an 18-basket disc golf course. Whispering Grace Horse Park is a non-profit organization that rescues horses and offers animal therapy sessions. Elms Country Club, on the western fringes of West Brookfield, is a 27-hole, public golf course that also hosts the annual Tigertown Open, an annual tournament that attracts pro and amateur golfers.
The Elms Country Club provides an enjoyable golf experience that meets or exceeds expectations.

Groceries, restaurants and shops
For grocery and shopping errands, head 2 miles east to Mayflower Plaza. The shopping center has Buehler's Fresh Food for produce and meat, Dollar General for home essentials, a barber shop and a few local restaurants. One will need to drive into the city for chain department stores like Lowe’s, Walmart or Marshalls, all located at the Massillon Marketplace. The closest shopping destination is Belden Village Mall, about 11 miles northeast of West Brookfield. Massillon’s city center has franchised restaurants including IHOP and Applebee’s. For a more local experience, visit Smitty’s Steak & Ale.
Buehler's supermarket offers local produce, meat & baked goods, plus beer, wine & spirits.

Events
West Brookfield residents are also loyal fans of the city’s football team Massillon Tigers, which draws a following rarely seen for high school sports elsewhere in the country. The peak of that following is the annual rivalry between Massillon and McKinley High, said Brian Bixler, the manager of Massillon business, Liebermann’s and Beyond Bakery. Ketler says it's not unusual to see neighbors and friends in the stands. “Football is huge here, and people go all out to cheer and support for the Massillon-McKinley opening game,” he said. Residents bring their children to the city’s annual Fun Fest, one of the city’s most notable events, to enjoy live shows, face painting, bounce houses and free movies.
