Matawan is a commuter suburb in Monmouth County with quick access to popular New Jersey Transit options and coastal recreation on Raritan Bay. Matawan, which gets its name from the Lenape Tribe’s language, means “where two rivers come together,” symbolizing the town surrounded by lakes, streams, and creeks. Founded in 1885, the borough once had its own booming business district, which was destroyed by fire in 1901. Matawan was also the site of a 1916 shark attack that inspired the legendary film Jaws a half-century later. The site of the attack has a “man-eater” mural and an informative plaque.
Over the past century, the borough has largely served as a residential community with a handful of local businesses. Most residents commute for work, and major employers in greater Monmouth County include healthcare, food services and education.
