Countryside meets lake life
Located about 40 miles north of downtown Knoxville near the shores of Norris Lake lies Sharps Chapel, a quiet, rural community where country living and lakeside recreation converge. “When you live out here, it's because you love the outdoors — there's so much to do from boating and fishing to four-wheeling and camping,” says Brenda Hamel, a SRS Realtor with The Real Estate Firm, Inc., who has lived near Norris Lake for 20 years. “People come to our area because they're tired of the hustle and bustle." A small country store stocks a few essentials, but residents depend on their cars to get to major grocery stores or work.
Sharps Chapel sits just outside of Chuck Swan State Forest.
You can still find some homes on the water at Norris Lake.

Lake and state forest for outdoor adventures
Norris Lake has more than 800 miles of shoreline, much of which remains protected from development. It's an active spot for wakeboarding, boating and other water-based recreation. "If you live on the lake, you might not want to paddleboard on a Saturday in July, but first thing in the morning on a weekday, the water is like glass and the fog is just lifting off the water," Hamel says. "It is absolutely the most beautiful and peaceful place to be." Those who don't live directly on the lake may store their boats at one of the many marinas that dot the shores. One such location is Lakeview Boat Dock, which offers boat slips, a ship store and lakeside campsites. For further outdoor adventures, two state parks are within a quick drive of Sharps Chapel, including Chuck Swan State Forest, which covers more than 24,000 acres of forested land. The space is open for a variety of recreation, including hunting, fishing, horseback riding and caving. At Big Ridge State Park, there are 15 miles of walking trails and access to Norris Lake. There's also a small town park, Sharps Chapel Community Park, which rests behind the volunteer fire department and next to the elementary school.
You can store your boat and go camping at the beautiful Lakeview Marina.
Sharps Chapel Community Park features a running trail, playground, and ball fields.

Home prices generally fall between $250,000 and $850,000, depending on the condition of the house and the acreage, though newer builds beside the lake may list for more.

Celebrating fall in Union County
The area's largest gathering is the annual Sharps Chapel Fall Festival, which takes place at the park behind the fire department. This day-long event is packed with activities, including a car show, auction and a scarecrow-making contest. Local musicians play in the gazebo, and children under the age of 12 can compete for titles like "Cutest Cowboy" or "Lil' Miss Sharps Chapel" in the Cowboys and Tiaras Pageant. After the sun goes down, there is a fireworks show. Each September, the Sharps Chapel Volunteer Fire Department holds a fundraising supper, and residents stay busy with quilting and book clubs as well. Maynardville is home to the Union County Heritage Festival, a yearly celebration of the arts and culture of Appalachia. Home bakers bring their best pies, cloggers tap their feet to bluegrass music and kids can see plenty of farm animals and tractors.
Shop or dine at Sharps Chapel Market
Before a day out on the lake, folks can enjoy a hearty breakfast or load the cooler with drinks and snacks at Sharps Chapel Market, a convenience store and full-service restaurant in one. Daddy Dogs is open on weekends only, with a limited menu of mostly hot dogs and ice cream. It has a small seating area with umbrella-shaded picnic benches. Boaters can head across the lake to Bubba Brew's Sports Bar & Grill, a floating restaurant which serves a little of everything from barbecue to catfish po' boys. In the summer months, Bubba's often has live music. There are also several dining spots in central Maynardville, about 12 miles south. Some people do their grocery shopping at the Food City in Maynardville, while others visit the Ingles supermarket and Walmart in New Tazewell, a 15-mile drive north of Sharps Chapel.

Commuting by car on rural highways and byways
Since Sharps Chapel is a rural community, most residents must rely on their cars to make the 40-plus-mile journey to downtown Knoxville or the 55-mile drive to McGhee Tyson Airport. Sharps Chapel Road is a paved, two-lane road that joins state Route 33 at the edge of Norris Lake. From Route 33, commuters connect with larger highways and interstates into Knoxville. In medical emergencies, people can contact the volunteer fire department, which has several EMS technicians and an ambulance to transport patients. The nearest hospital Claiborne Medical Center, about 17 miles northeast, and the closest Level I Trauma Center is in the University of Tennessee Medical Center, a little over 40 miles south. The area's rural atmosphere is also reflected in its CAP Index crime score, which is a 1 out of 10, far lower than the national average of 4.
Life along the water
With streams, Norris Lake and the Powell River nearby, there is some inherent risk of flooding. However, most houses are elevated above the high water line, and the Tennessee Valley Authority actively monitors the lake's level and drains the water when needed.
