Curved residential lanes and big-box shopping areas sit alongside tightly arranged city blocks of homes in North Maywood. Residents here are a short drive east of Chicago, but have a natural buffer from the city in the form of a sprawling nature preserve to the east. This community bridges the residential blocks of the Maywood area with the retail areas and suburban developments of Melrose Park.

Most of North Maywood’s single-family homes were built between the 1870s and the early 1960s. Home styles are varied, including American Foursquares, minimal traditional homes and split-levels. Brick, wood and vinyl exteriors are common, and some homes have more ornate features like columns, dormer windows and gable-front roofs. Values start near $150,000 and top out near $425,000.
Multi-family units in the neighborhood are generally on the northeast side of the community in the Residences of Riverwoods condominium complex and the Melrose Commons senior apartment community. Most of these were built in the mid-2000s, ranging between $200,000 and $450,000.

Foundations at District 89 schools
Two elementary schools within Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview School District No. 89 serve the community. Jane Addams Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School both earn B-minus grades on Niche. Public school students in the area generally continue to Stevenson Middle School, which offers 10 sports programs throughout the year and earns a C grade. Proviso East High School, which gets a C-minus, has more than 20 athletic programs.

The outdoor life in Thatcher Woods
To the neighborhood’s east, Thatcher Woods is a wide-reaching preserve made up largely of floodplain forest area along the Des Plaines. The 245-acre area offers a variety of activities, including hikes along the walking trails, spots for birdwatching, picnic areas and an indoor venue available for rentals. Bataan Park sits just south of Jane Addams Elementary School’s campus and has a play area, two baseball fields and a dedicated area for tennis and pickleball. Just south of the neighborhood, the outdoor pool at Maywood Park and the Maywood Public Library District are prime choices for cooling off in the summer. The park is popular year-round with baseball fields, a basketball court and open green space.

Several big box retailers are situated on the retail corridor near North Avenue. Groceries and everyday needs are readily available at Jewel-Osco, Target and Costco. Specialty options such as SamsBeauty Warehouse and Best Buy Outlet are also nearby, alongside a Goodwill thrift store, Marshalls and Ross. On the south side of the neighborhood, a Walgreens store offers a quick stop for prescriptions near Lake Street, with small convenience stores such as Maywood One Stop Shop and Supermercado Oriente Food and Liquor rounding out the area’s shopping selections.
A humble gas station exterior gives way to the sizzle of the grill and the checkerboard-lined walls at Carnitas Don Alfredo, a Mexican take-out shop on the south end of the neighborhood. The restaurant serves up tacos, tortas and burritos throughout the week, while focusing on pozole and menudo soups on the weekends. Easygoing brunches are a specialty at Mr. Stacks, a daytime diner with specialties like bananas foster French toast and lemon blueberry crepes alongside traditional pancake and egg platters. Popular fast food and casual restaurants such as Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, Starbucks and Olive Garden are available near the big box stores on the neighborhood’s north side.

Annual celebrations, movies and natural wonders
Entertainment options close to residents include the Cinemark Melrose Park and XD movie theater on North Avenue. To the east in River Forest, the Trailside Museum of Natural History hosts book clubs, rotating exhibitions and guided nature tours on the grounds of a Victorian estate. Maywood Fest, an annual celebration that brings live music, vendors and carnival attractions to the village, happens about a mile south of the neighborhood in Veterans Park each September.

14 miles from downtown Chicago
North Avenue and 1st Avenue are the main thoroughfares in North Maywood, with the latter connecting Maywood to Melrose Park. Downtown Chicago and the Loop are about 14 miles east of the neighborhood. Pace bus stops are available along 5th Street for local travel. Commuters can catch trains into Chicago or other parts of the Chicagoland area via the Maywood Metra station on Main Street, just south of the neighborhood. For medical emergencies, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital is just north of the neighborhood on North Avenue. Residents traveling beyond north Illinois can catch flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, about 8 miles north.
