On the northern edge of the Metroplex is the suburban neighborhood of North McKinney, a quiet suburban area outside the heart of the Dallas area. "The people who are moving out there are moving there because there are plenty of new homes," says Jared Tye, broker and owner of the Tye Realty Group. McKinney has become a popular neighborhood for those looking to escape the busy lifestyle near Dallas and Fort Worth and move to the suburbs. "It is growing quickly," says Beth Shumate, the senior communications and media specialist at Visit McKinney, who has lived in the city for over 31 years. "We have a lot of chains now and some good restaurants but still have the beautiful natural areas that people love."
Newer brick homes built after 2010
North McKinney has several subdivisions with homes built close to their neighbors. "We have a lot of new beautiful, up-and-coming areas," Shumate says. "The area south of Erwin Park is very rooted in nature, and the area near Trinity Falls is really growing." Sidewalks along residential streets provide walkability throughout the area, and roads have options for street parking. Many houses in North McKinney are newer brick homes built in the 2010s with an attached garage and driveway. Newer Craftsman and Tudor-inspired designs usually cost between $250,000 and $500,000, while large McMansion-style houses with multiple acres of land and other amenities range from $900,000 to over a million dollars.

Lots to do at Erwin Park
North McKinney is home to one of the premier parks in the city, Erwin Park. "Erwin Park is awesome; it's the main mountain biking park. “We've been there several times," Tye says. The park has 10 miles of mountain biking trails and a bike skills course with several ramps and hills. The over 200-acre space also has walking trails and campsites throughout the area to gather around the fire with friends and family. "The trails are very hilly; I tried to hike them once, and it was tiring," Shumate says. "They are kept nice and cleaned up; it's really a cool place." Residents spend hot summer days at Juanita Maxfield Aquatic Center, the local pool and splash pad.

Floats and parades for Christmas and Fourth of July
McKinney residents don’t miss out on the opportunity to celebrate as a community, with Fourth of July and the holiday season being among the main times of the year. The Christmas celebration is on the second Saturday in December and includes the school marching band, floats and a parade. The Fourth of July celebration starts in in the morning around the historic downtown square with a patriotic festival and a Yankee Doodle block party with the nearby shops. Children enjoy testing their lucks on the dunk tanks and checking out all the vendors. At night, the fireworks begin with inflatable bouncing houses and live music in the parks. “The community really turns out for the events and make them special,” Shumate says.
