Camp White military training base becomes White City
Nicknamed the “Alcatraz” of military training camps because of the uncompromising Oregon nature surrounding it, Camp White was constructed in 1941 to train the 91st “Fir Tree” Division during World War II. Instead of soldiers, it now houses the Veterans Administration’s Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics, a major employer of the surrounding community. “White City was called Camp White,” says Chelle Fowler, a broker with Keller Williams Realty Southern Oregon. “That’s why it’s called White City.” In contrast to its long-standing history, new traditional homes built in the 1990s surrounding several outdoor community destinations comprise the Census-designated area.

New traditional builds, manufactured homes and townhouses
There are many different types of places to call home in White City, and prices for single-family homes fall significantly below the average across the Medford metro area. Single-level, new traditional homes with three bedrooms built mostly throughout the 2010s cost between $300,000 and $400,000. Many feature Craftsman touches, like chunky columns that frame small front porches. New builds—constructed in 2023 and 2024—feature simpler, cleaner lines, while a few 1970s ranch-style homes can be found for sale between $300,000 and $330,000.
Townhouses with two or three bedrooms are clustered near the center of White City, selling between $250,000 and $300,000. About seven manufactured home communities collect monthly lot rents of around $600. These homes primarily cost between $30,000 and $115,000, which were largely built throughout the 1990s and have two or three bedrooms.

Speedways, splash parks and skateparks in White City
The White City Community Playground sits at the center of the neighborhood, distinguished by its sky-blue rubber tiles. The cherry red, white and blue play structure is next to a full basketball court and a few picnic tables shaded by gazebos. Children can find respite from the hot Southern Oregon sun at the White City Splash Park in the west of the neighborhood, while skaters test their skills on the ramps and rails at the White City Community Skatepark nearby. Though the neighboring CASCADE Community Pool requires an admission fee, pool access during open swim hours costs less than $10 for those without a monthly membership.
Motorsport enthusiasts flock just south of White City’s border for car, dirt bike and other racing events. Fans gather on the sidelines at the Medford Dragstrip and the Southern Oregon Speedway, while owners can take their own vehicles out for a spin nearby. The courses are situated between a shooting range and the Stone Ridge Golf Club.

A cluster of restaurants on Crater Lake Highway in east White City includes The Apple Peddler, a traditional diner that serves classic breakfasts with omelets and golden hashbrowns. Nearby, diners sit in black booths embossed with golden dragon imagery to enjoy Chinese American dishes at Ling’s. The Grocery Outlet is one of the only grocery stores in White City, so locals may often have to travel less than 10 minutes north to the Walmart Supercenter in Eagle Point or to other options in Medford.

As part of an unincorporated community, children living in White City can join the Eagle Point public school system. They may start their education at Table Rock Elementary School, which earns a C-minus grade from Niche, before potentially moving forward to C-rated White Mountain Middle School. Both schools are in White City, but teenagers may have to travel about 10 minutes if they attend Eagle Point High School, which also receives a C. There, they may enroll in career technical education programs for agricultural science, manufacturing, automotive repair, business, computer or communications technology and culinary arts and catering. The school’s SkillsUSA team competes at a national level for engineering and culinary arts.

Crater Lake Highway connects to Eagle Point
Oregon state Routes 140 and 62 delineate the boundaries of White City. The latter—known as Crater Lake Highway—passes through White City on its way north from Medford to the Eagle Point community and its high school. “They are very connected,” Fowler says. “Eagle Point is right next door.” Before it reaches Eagle Point, though, the freeway passes popular restaurants like The Apple Peddler, The Grocery Outlet and the Veteran Affairs Department on the site of the old military training camp. It also connects to Interstate 5 in Medford, which commuters use to travel to Portland and California.
Oregon SR-140 traverses the state horizontally, winding its way east towards several popular lakes and eventually reaching Nevada. The Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD) operates line 60: White City, which brings passengers around the community and connects to Medford.
