Suburb midway between Boston, Worcester and Providence
Originally spelled “Midway,” the Boston suburb Medway is believed by some to have gotten its name because it’s at the center point between Boston, Worcester and Providence. Others argue that the town is named for the Medway region of England. It’s unanimous among locals, however, that Medway is a great place to attend school, enjoy nature and purchase a home. Sherri Hannon, Director of Programs with the Tri-County Regional Chamber of Commerce, describes the town as “charming, quaint and lovely.”

Variety of homes from colonials to condos
The average price of a Medway home is between $650,000 and $700,000. Here you’ll see a variety of single-family home styles, as well as a few condominiums. You’ll find 2014 colonial craftsman-style homes priced around $750,000 within the Charles River Village Condo neighborhood. There are 2016 colonials on half-acre lots on Lantern Lane near the interstate and shopping areas. On Causeway Street, a narrow, wooded roadway, you’ll see Garrison-style homes and 1970s Dutch colonials that are priced just below $690,000. You’ll also see newly constructed colonials for about $845,000, 1950s ranch-style homes and two-bedroom condominium units within large 1880s residences.

Top-rated public schools
Students in town are served by Medway Public Schools, a district with an A rating from Niche. Medway’s youngest students can attend McGovern Elementary School for preschool through first grade, rated an A-minus. Then, second through fourth graders can go to A-rated Burke-Memorial Elementary. For fifth through eighth grades, students head to Medway Middle School, which also earns an A-minus from Niche. At the high school level, students can choose to attend A-minus-rated Medway High School or one of the area’s two specialty schools. Norfolk County Agricultural High School, locally referred to as “Aggie,” is a public school on a 365-acre facility in Walpole that serves students from 28 towns. Here, students can take courses in the areas of animal and marine science, agricultural and diesel mechanics, environmental science, and horticulture. Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical School, a comprehensive academic and technical high school, accepts students from 11 different towns into a variety of programs, including carpentry, automotive technology and culinary arts. Students in the culinary arts program run Gerry’s Place, a restaurant that is open to the public and serves pre-made meals, salads and baked goods.
Locally-owned eateries
Speaking of baked goods, the Muffin House Café on Main Street is a great place to start the day. This popular morning spot serves breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and, as expected, a variety of muffin flavors, including banana chocolate chip, cappuccino, and blueberry, their signature muffin. Hannon notes that Restaurant 45 is another town favorite that serves classic dishes, such as chicken broccoli alfredo and chicken parmesan. “They’re family-owned and very well known,” she says. “They also host a lot of special events.” Locals like to grab brisket and barbecue take-out from PJ’s Smoke “N” Grill, a family-friendly restaurant with a focus on homemade recipes, and for grocery items and household essentials, residents can shop at Shaw’s in Medway Commons, also home to Starbucks, Subway and CVS.

Public park locals rave about
For some time outside, Choate Park is the perfect spot for a walk or to enjoy what locals say is a phenomenal playground. “It’s really nice, and it has a splash area,” Hannon says. There's also a tranquil pond and a covered pavilion, which is also the site of many of the town’s events, including treasure hikes and photography classes. For those who prefer indoor adventure, the Medway Public Library features good reads, as well as toddler music classes and the Unicorn Club, a kindness-motivated club for tweens and teens.
Medway checks the boxes for those who seek a suburb with a strong school system and plenty of public parks and recreational options, and for those who don’t mind a 35-mile drive into Boston.
