East Memphis pairs convenient amenities and comfortable subdivisions

East Memphis is located about 8 miles from Downtown Memphis, but the neighborhood is home to many of the city’s major attractions and amenities. The University of Memphis, Audubon Park and popular shopping centers are all located in the neighborhood, with additional spots like Shelby Farms Park nearby. “What a lot of people like about living in East Memphis is that you're close to everything. It's the center of the city, really,” says Fontaine Albritton, a Realtor with Crye-Leike and a lifelong Memphian. “It's close to a lot of popular schools — private schools and also some of the city’s best public schools — and shopping, and parks.” The neighborhood’s convenience, plus its comfortable subdivisions, make it a popular choice for homebuyers.

A wide selection of homes, from ranch-style to French Country estates

Poplar Avenue is one of the city’s busiest corridors. But the subdivisions that populate either side of the avenue make up most of the neighborhood and feature quiet, tree-shaded streets and cul-de-sacs. Ranch-style homes are most common throughout the neighborhood, with smaller homes at the market’s lower end, selling from $150,000 to $400,000. Larger ranch-style, Colonial Revival and New Traditional builds go from $400,000 to $800,000. French Country-style houses range from $800,000 to as much as $2 million, depending on size. Condos and townhomes are also available, going from $80,000 to $200,000 for a cozy space catering to students, or between $300,000 and $700,000 for a luxury unit. Rentals are common around the University of Memphis campus.

The Memphis-Shelby County Schools system serves East Memphis and receives a C-plus overall grade from Niche. Though the neighborhood is divided into several attendance areas, most of the neighborhood is zoned to White Station Elementary School. The school receives a B-plus grade. White Station Middle School gets an A-minus, and White Station High School receives an A. Niche ranks the high school as the best in the district. Students can apply to attend schools outside their attendance zones, including specialized magnet programs. Nearby private schools include the A-rated Harding Academy, which serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Shopping centers and local staples on Poplar Avenue

Poplar Avenue is the main commercial corridor through East Memphis. Shopping destinations include Oak Court Mall, Poplar Commons, and Eastgate Shopping Center, all of which have plenty of retail options. Albritton recommends the Novel bookstore and its attached restaurant, Libra, both located in the Laurelwood shopping center. Grocery shoppers can head to the Whole Foods on Poplar, while Target sits just off the street for other necessities. Fast food restaurants also line the avenue alongside local favorites like Hog & Hominy, a Michelin Bib Gourmand winner that blends Italian favorites with Southern cuisine. College haunts include RP Tracks Restaurant and Bar, right near the University of Memphis. “There’s a strip on Highland Street where students go, and young people go,” Albritton says. “There are restaurants and bars, and things like that.”

It’s also the site of Mempho Fest, a three-day music festival put on each fall. Locals cheer for the University of Memphis Tigers sports teams. The women’s basketball, baseball and softball teams play on campus, while football calls Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in the adjacent Chickasaw Gardens neighborhood home. Commutes downtown, or within the neighborhood

The Memphis Area Transit Authority serves the neighborhood with bus routes, which are primarily centered on the University of Memphis campus. But residents more often drive for their commutes. Union Avenue leads 8 miles west to Downtown Memphis, while Interstate 240 makes up the eastern border of the neighborhood. Commuters might also head to the University of Memphis, located in the neighborhood, or St. Francis Hospital, just across I-240. “Memphis has just grown a lot since I was a kid,” Albritton says. “There’s a lot of traffic around East Memphis, more than it used to be. I don’t think it compares to LA or some other places. But for us, it’s a lot.” Memphis International Airport is 10 miles south and is also a hub for employers like FedEx.
