Historic Midtown Memphis neighborhood close to outdoor attractions
The entrance to Vollintine Evergreen from the east on North Parkway consists of a natural tunnel of mature trees and views of the Rhodes College campus’ distinct stone Gothic Revival buildings. Sharing its name with two intersecting neighborhood streets, Vollintine Evergreen lies in a historic district mostly comprised of century-old cottages. During the week, many here make time for nature by walking, biking or jogging along the neighborhood’s V&E Greenline, while others head to Overton Park, the 342-acre home of the Memphis Zoo and one of the few surviving old-growth forests in the state. The neighborhood also forms part of Midtown, a core Memphis community known for its vibrant arts and dining scene. Paige Arnold, vice president for Crye-Leike Realtors Inc.’s East Memphis office says the neighborhood has the “Midtown vibe.” “Everybody loves everyone. They appreciate beautiful architecture and they want to keep it,” she says. “You can walk or bike to basically anything. You can also live in Vollintine Evergreen and hear the lions roar from the zoo.”
Craftsman bungalows with ‘gorgeous’ brickwork
Vollintine Evergreen mainly consists of 1920s and 1930s Craftsman-style bungalows with brick, stone and stucco sidings. The neighborhood also features some opulent Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival designs. The neighborhood's declared historic designation requires the Memphis Landmarks Commission to review any new construction or exterior work on the homes and is intended to protect the community's character. "The houses have some of the most gorgeous and unique brickwork you’ve ever seen in your life. It’s just absolutely gorgeous. No house looks the same and the styles are unique," explains Arnold. Most homes in Vollintine Evergreen have footprints no larger than 1,800 square feet, with only a few exceeding 3,000 square feet. Single-family home prices here run between $150,000 and the upper $300,000s; with some larger houses selling for over $500,000.

The Crosstown Concourse and home to Memphis’ oldest family-owned bar
Vollintine Evergreen’s eateries include spots like Cafe Eclectic, which serves up French press coffee and breakfasts made with Southern flair. Built in 1927, the Crosstown Concourse is an Art Deco and Art Moderne landmark that initially housed a Sears store and a warehouse. With its notable 14-story tower, the building — nicknamed the “Vertical Village” — was renovated in the 2010s and is now home to a mix of restaurants, bars, art galleries, performance spaces and apartments. Crosstown patrons can enjoy anything from fried chicken at Abner’s to frozen desserts at Sweet Magnolia Gelato to craft beers at the Crosstown Brewing Co. Vollintine Evergreen is also home to Alex’s Tavern, the oldest family-owned bar in the city. Regulars to the small and dimly lit establishment enjoy bar games and the occasional live band. Kroger is one of the nearest grocery store options.

At the doorstep of the ‘jewel of Memphis’
Running diagonally across the community, the roughly 2-mile-long V&E Greenline trail and natural area is one of the neighborhood’s most popular amenities. Trail users will find public art and musical spaces complete with playable xylophones. The miles of trail in nearby Overton Park include dirt paths that allow for nature walks through a forest mainly populated by tulip poplar, oak and hickory trees. Other attractions include a pond, a playground and an arched gateway that is adorned with a heap of multi-colored bicycles. This park is also home to the Memphis Zoo, where occupants range from moon jellyfish to prominent land mammals like hippopotamuses and grizzly bears. In 2024, Newsweek readers voted the zoo as the second best in the country. “Overton Park is beautiful. It’s the jewel of Memphis. Between the hiking trails, the dog park, the music, the Shell, it’s incredible. And now they fixed up the golf course and made it even better,” says Tom Christiansen, a former Memphis area resident who recently stopped by the park to play at its 9-hole golf course.
