A growing rural community home to big lots and plenty to do nearby
A Worcester County bedroom community with wide-ranging appeal, Mendon is anything but sleepy. The area’s rural persona serves as an ideal backdrop for growth. “There’s still a lot of land in Mendon, there’s a lot of newer homes, and there are lots of homes being built,” says Cindy Donati, a local Realtor with Custom Home Realty Inc., who has 38 years of selling experience. New construction aside, homes sit atop wealthily-sized plots of land, and residents have quick access to outdoor activities like a nearby zoo and drive-in theater to keep busy.
Mendon's outdoor activities includes cooling off at Nipmuc Pond.

Residents have quick access to Southwick’s Zoo, the largest zoo in New England, where visitors can get up close looks at lions, camels and hundreds of other wild animals. A popular evening activity of the community is catching films at the Mendon Twin Drive-In, where guests can enjoy refreshments thanks to its snack bar and beer garden. A more traditional outdoor experience occurs at spots like Nipmuc Pond, home to Mendon Town Beach, a popular kayaking, fishing and swimming spot in the summer months.

New Homes in Mendon on large lots come on a variety of modern colonial styles.
The homes of Mendon
Many of Mendon’s new homes are sprouting as part of new subdivisions, full of new traditional craftsman and colonial-style houses on lots that can stretch more than an acre, with most having at least an acre. Big yards are common around town, regardless of the construction era. “Mendon is very rural,” Donati says. These well-manicured lawns sometimes line slim country roads, heavily shaded by mature trees. Considering Mendon is the second-oldest town in Worcester County, some of the homes here date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. That being said, a portion of homes were constructed over the course of the 20th century. Prices for homes in the community range from $350,000 to $700,000 depending on size and condition, while those on significantly larger acreage can reach up to $1 million.

After a full day, a sit-down dinner can be had at Alicante Restaurant & Lounge. “It’s very, very popular,” says Donati. The local favorite is known for its short ribs and views of a neighboring pond.

Those in attendance get to enjoy live performances from local bands, various vendors, and a fireworks show at the end of the night. During the holiday season, residents flock to the town center for the Mendon Annual Santa Parade and Tree Lighting.
