An idyllic neighborhood that sits alongside Stanford University
Homes in Stanford Hills are in a crescent-shaped parcel of land sandwiched between Stanford University’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and the Stanford Dish Area, a sprawling wilderness conservation site. Between these university outposts is a hilly and verdant area of homes split into two distinct sections — Stanford Hills and Stanford Weekend Acres. Its mountainous streets are covered by the shadows of eucalyptus trees, and the homes look straight out of the Hollywood Hills of the 1960s. “It’s a little more rural. It’s a little country. Everyone knows each other and looks out for each other,” says Realtor Lyn Cobb of Coldwell Banker Realty, a lifelong resident of Menlo Park who has worked in realty for more than two decades.
Located at the southern edge of Menlo Park, the neighborhood offers easy access to the historic campus at Stanford, local parks and shopping destinations. “The location is outstanding. You’re close to trails, hiking and the university. And of course, the weather is perfect. It’s just a very idyllic place to live,” says Realtor Matt McCormick of Coldwell Banker Realty, who lives and works in the area.

Well-maintained homes in an idyllic setting
Stanford Hills, the subdivision at the north end of the neighborhood, is notable because Stanford University owns all the land there. “You own the house, but you don’t own the property,” Cobb says. Even with that unique arrangement home values range from $2 million to north of $4 million. The streets are lined with upscale ranch homes where many university employees and professors live.
Just up the road in Stanford Weekend Acres, eclectic estates back up to rolling hills and natural scenery. Farmhouses from the 1920s painted in bright pastels sit in the lap of leaning cypress trees and loblolly pines, with barns converted to studios. At the top of the market are new constructions made to look like the older homes, but with all the modern appliances one might expect in a multi-million-dollar estate. It’s $1.5 million at a minimum to get into this small neighborhood, and prices go up to $4 million.

Outdoor recreation abounds in Stanford Hills. The Stanford Golf Course is a nationally renowned 18-hole course that borders the eastern edge of the neighborhood. Some residents can walk to a trailhead of the Stanford Dish Area, a vast wildlife preserve carved with trails and named for the iconic radio telescope in the middle of the landscape. “A lot of people who live there make it their daily outing,” Cobb says. Stanford Hills Park is also an option. This little park has a playground, walking paths and picnic area.
