Small-town community with greenery and tradition
The quiet, tree-lined streets and picturesque Victorian architecture throughout Merchantville make this borough a charming, suburban escape. “Merchantville is probably 95% residential, but we do have a small downtown area,” says Mayor Ted Brennan, who is also a lifetime local. “Folks who relocate from Philadelphia describe us as a tree-lined oasis.” About 7 miles east of Center City, this South Jersey suburb maintains a strong community that nods to the past through the preservation of historical homes and embraces the development of the future through trendy James Beard-nominated eateries. “Merchantville is built on the backs of the volunteers we have in the community,” Brennan says. “Which is everybody.” This togetherness can be seen when the entire borough turns into Monsterville in October or during the annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony.

Victorian Cape Cods and colonial homes
Established in 1874, Merchantville contains boutiques, taverns, offices and even community centers in well-preserved Victorian and colonial buildings from that period. The borough’s residential homes follow this historic charm. Cape Cods and colonials range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 square feet, and prices reflect the home’s space, typically costing between $275,000 and $625,000. “There’s a lot of beautiful Victorian single-family homes,” says Tito Santiago, a Realtor with Garden State Properties Group that’s based in Merchantville. “We don’t have many duplexes or multi-family housing because the zoning here doesn’t allow it too often.” Shaded sidewalks connect neighbors, where quaint and manicured lawns lead to wide front porches. Some houses offer driveways and single-car garages, while other dwellings require street parking.

A variety of eats on Centre Street
While Maple Avenue is the main thoroughfare through Merchantville, the downtown area branches off this road on Centre Street and Park Avenue. The popular Blue Monkey Tavern pays homage to the building’s original 1893 digs. The first floor offers brews and burgers, and the second floor – which formerly served as a post office and Free Mason’s lodge – is open for larger parties or private events. Nearby is Park Place Cafe and Restaurant, and Omega’s next door is a soul food eatery with a healthy twist. “Parks Place is a James Beard-nominated restaurant, and it’s very hard to get a seat there,” Brennan says. “The chef is very into natural elements in his cooking.” Also in this downtown area are spots for pizza, Thai, Indian and Japanese cuisine. After a meal, residents can stop at The Station for a cup of coffee or Eclipse Brewing for a pint. There are no grocery or department stores in Merchantville, but big-name shopping at Wegman’s, Costco, Target and Trader Joe’s is just 2 miles away in Cherry Hill.

Top-rated public and private schools
Public school students attend kindergarten through eighth grade at Merchantville Elementary School, which is graded a B from Niche. “A number of our teachers are residents in the community,” Brennan says. “Even the crossing guards are grandparents of the students walking to school every day.” Pennsauken High School receives a B-minus grade and is ranked in the top third of Best High Schools for Athletes in New Jersey, according to Niche. “I went through this school system, and my children have too,” Brennan says. “It really prepares kids for the next level. A lot of people move here and stay here through high school because of the great schooling.” Private education options include St. Peter School, a kindergarten through eighth-grade school with an A-plus Niche grade and Camden Catholic High School, graded an A.

Community celebrations at Wellwood Park
On the west side of Merchantville, right off Maple Avenue, Wellwood Park is where locals gather for different community events. “It’s our biggest open space park where we have our annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony,” Brennan says. “We’re also celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the borough of Merchantville. We’ll have a big parade, and the 8th-grade class actually designed a lot of the competitive events that will go on.” The Merchantville Community Center is an old Victorian home that’s been converted into a multi-use center, and outside there are athletic fields and courts. “We also have an old railbed that’s been converted to a trail that runs the entire length of the community parallel to Maple Avenue,” Brennan says. “It’s coined the Merchantville Mile. It’s a real connectivity and exercise tool because folks can walk this path into the downtown district.” On the south side of the borough, the private Merchantville Country Club offers a 9-hole course.

The Borough of Monsterville
In addition to community events and annual holiday parades through the downtown area, Merchantville transforms into its own version of Halloweentown in the fall. “We’ve become well-known for becoming the Borough of Monsterville in October,” Brennan says. “We lean into it with a full lineup of events every weekend, like home decoration contests with multiple categories. It speaks to how invested our community is in coming together.” This tight-knit borough connection can also be seen through the services of Merchantville’s many churches, including St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church and Grace Episcopal. “All of our churches give back to the community,” Brennan says. “And not just locally. Some give back to the larger community by helping to manage food insecurity in the area.”
Getting around on the NJ Transit bus
Commuters can hop onto U.S. Route 130, which runs along the outskirts of Merchantville and becomes U.S. Route 30 as it ventures into downtown Philadelphia. Those without a vehicle can catch the NJ Transit bus, as there are several stops scattered throughout the borough.

Mechantville is a family rich neighborhood. We have a walking / bike path and everyone here treats each other like family. Our public schools are wonderful. I wish we had more options for night life as we only have a couple of options.
