A quiet community in Meriden
Located less than 3 miles from downtown Meriden, South Meriden is a small neighborhood with a small-town atmosphere on the outskirts of the city. "It's like a little village within a town," says Amber Fischer, Realtor with Lewis Real Estate, who lives in the neighborhood. "It has a special something you wouldn't know about unless you live here." Although South Meriden is technically a neighborhood within the city, a quaint Main Street with a handful of local restaurants and community events like the annual Christmas Festival help curate residents' identities, separate from the city. Tree-lined streets are dotted with charming Cape Cods and colonial-style homes, while the bustle of the city melts away in the distance. "It's peaceful and quiet. It doesn't feel like Meriden," Fischer says. With a close-knit community and a proud identity, South Meriden retains the neighborly atmosphere of a postcard New England village nearly equidistant from Hartford and New Haven.

Hiking in Hubbard Park
Hanover Pond's 70 acres invite anglers looking to catch a small or largemouth bass. Dossin Park Beach spans the pond's shoreline and offers scenic views, picnic areas, a canoe launch and access to hiking trails. The Hanover Pond Trail is just one section of the Meriden Linear Trail. This master city plan aims to increase walkability and connect residents to nearby parks and overarching trail systems around Connecticut. About 1 mile away, Habershon Field sits along the pond's banks and features numerous baseball fields for youth sports leagues, tennis courts and a basketball court. Additional sports facilities are scattered along the pond's perimeter, including a paved amateur race car track for kids and an indoor batting cage.
In addition to its many neighborhood parks, South Meriden is surrounded by sprawling green spaces with miles of hiking trails. Towering over Meriden atop East Peak is a stone observation tower dubbed Castle Craig. About 6 miles away from the neighborhood, locals can hike through Hubbard Park to reach the tower, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding city, or enjoy other amenities such as pickleball courts and an outdoor community pool.
About 10 miles west of Hubbard Park, Doctor Francis Giuffrida Park offers miles of hiking trails and stunning views of the Bradley Hubbard Reservoir. Numerous trails weave through steep woodlands, but Chauncey Peak is the most well-known scenic spot for reservoir views. Giuffrida Park hugs the southern tip of Lamentation Mountain State Park, an undeveloped preserve that spans 47 acres. The adjacent Hunter Memorial Golf Course offers a different kind of green and is rated by Connecticut Magazine as one of the state's top ten public courses.
The Castle Rock Tower can be accessed by hiking or driving through Hubbard Park in Meriden.

Seasonal festivities around town
Hubbard Park also serves as the gathering place for some of Meriden's largest events. Every spring, the park's green landscape is dotted with color as more than 600,000 daffodils come to full bloom. During peak blooms, residents gather to celebrate the Daffodil Festival with a parade, carnival rides, craft vendors and live music.
The South Meriden Christmas in the Village festival has been a community source of holiday spirit for 25 years. Main Street is shut down, and horse-drawn carriages trundle down the road while locals peruse the winter bazaar, roast chestnuts or take photos with Frosty the Snowman. "It's a beautiful event," Fischer says. "Very quaint, very intimate."
Cape Cods, colonials and bi-levels
As in many New England towns, Cape Cods, colonials, and saltboxes are a common sight here. Cape Cods, bi-level, split-level and ranch-style homes that sometimes feature attached garages can range from the low $200,000s to the mid $400,000s, depending on interior updates, square footage and curb appeal. Colonials and New Traditionals on larger lots can range from the upper $400,000s to the mid $600,000s. New construction is rare, but a few brand-new Colonial Revivals with attached two-car garages and 3,000 square feet of living space can sell from the low to mid $600,000s. This shortage of new construction and the desirability of the neighborhood's location mean that houses sell quickly. "If they're priced right, they'll go in a couple of days or a month at most," says local Realtor Kevin Green of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Small, older properties that could use some TLC can sell for less than $200,000. Condominium units can range from the low $100,000s for an older two-bedroom unit to the upper $200,000s for an end unit with a tandem two-car garage.
Larger homes with multiple garages are available in South Meriden.

Main Street's local restaurants
The neighborhood's Main Street is dotted with a handful of restaurants. Tom's Place is a beloved diner that has served the community for over 40 years. Open from 5:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., morning crowds include regulars looking to read the local newspaper over a warm cup of coffee and family and friends gathering for American brunch fare like chocolate chip pancakes and Western omelets later in the day. Just next door is Casa di Roma, a favorite for garlic knots, wings and pizza. Village Barn Sports Bar is the community's local watering hole down the street. "The area can be pretty split between the Red Sox and the Yankees," Green says. The neighborhood's favorable location between Boston and New York and its proximity to nearby Hartford gives residents options for a weekend splurge.
Chain grocers like Big Y World Class Supermarket and Aldi are located roughly 3 miles away along South Broad Street. Residents can also head to downtown Meriden every Saturday morning from July to October for fresh produce at the local farmers market. Additional big box stores nearby include Kohl's, Lowe's Home Improvement and Walmart Supercenter. About 4 miles north, Meriden Mall is home to major retailers such as T.J. Maxx and Best Buy.

Between the Big Apple and Beantown
The community is about 25 miles south of Hartford and 20 miles north of New Haven. CT Transit provides public transportation throughout the neighborhood, with bus stops scattered along Main Street. However, South Meriden is primarily car-dependent. "You've got Interstate 84 on one side and Interstate 91 on the other, so you can get to Harford in no time," Green says. Commuters can also head 3 miles into Meriden and hop on an Amtrak or CTrail train. Amtrak also connects residents about 2 hours south to New York City or 3 hours north to Boston. "You're right in the middle of everything," Green says. Small private planes can utilize the Meriden Markham Municipal Airport, but New Haven's Tweed regional airport is about 24 miles south. MidState Medical Center is the closest hospital, about 4 miles away.
