Fountain of the Sun: a private, age-restricted community
At Fountain of the Sun, residents can play a game of pickleball in the morning, a round of golf in the afternoon and finish the night playing Pinochle. This guard-gated, age restricted, 55-plus community located on the east side of Mesa prides itself on its myriad of clubs and activities that encourage an active lifestyle. According to Heather Roberts, the activity manager for Fountain of the Sun, residents love “the community feel… It feels like you know your neighbors, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming.” Not only does the HOA and staff host plenty of events and activities, but with Superstition Mall in walking distance and the 202 and 60 freeways nearby, locals here never have trouble finding something to do.
Outdoor amenities at Fountain of the Sun
The biggest draw to Fountain of the Sun is the array of private, local amenities. The community has something for everyone, including a pool and jacuzzi for those who crave relaxation. Residents who want to stay active can hit softballs at the batting cage, shoot some pool in the billiard room, cast a line in the fishing lake or join the bocce ball league. Residents also have access to the semi-private Fountain of the Sun Country Club, which has an executive 18-hole golf course and driving range. Residents can participate on competitive teams across multiple sports, including the shuffleboard league, which plays on the six courts that were refurbished in 2021. Even four-legged members of the community have an off leash gathering space at the Dog Park Club. For those who would like to seek adventure outside of their backyards, Realtor Joanna Siravo-Hamric with Realty One Group, who has over 18 years of experience in the area, says that the “Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch is a huge asset to the neighborhood.” This 110-acre wetland and wildlife sanctuary has activities from “Dino Digs” and hiking trails to overnight campsites.
Fountain of the Sun events, classes and clubs
Fountain of the Sun’s daily events are the glue that keeps the community close. Group exercise classes are held nearly every day of the week, from “slimnastics” and water aerobics to Zumba and line dancing. In the community centers, locals can pick up a book from the library, take a technology class in the computer lab or make a quilt in the craft room. The community also hosts a steady slate of events throughout the year, including the annual Weekend of Fun fundraiser, filled with food and drinks, learning events and a variety show with live performances. The chorus performs services throughout the year for the community or within the neighborhood’s non-denominational churches. Weekly events, such as bingo, Scrabble and Bridge are popular attractions, as well, and take place at the Activity Center. Residents interested in getting involved in community happenings are encouraged to volunteer and join in on the fun throughout the year.
Superstition Springs, burgers at Birdies and nearby health care
Fountain of the Sun is conveniently located 5 miles from Banner Baywood Medical Center, which offers over 150 rooms and an emergency department with 37 private treatment rooms. Prescriptions can also be filled nearby at the CVS on Southern Road. Residents can buy their groceries and daily essentials in bulk from Costco, conveniently located about a 1 mile from the community, or Walmart, Target and Lowe’s, all within 3 miles. Fountain of the Sun is also within a few blocks of the Superstition Springs Center mall, which features retail stores like Macy’s, JCPenney and Bath & Body works, as well as restaurants and a movie theater. It is not imperative that residents leave the community for a meal, though, as Birdies Bar & Grill is open for American pub fare adjacent to the country club.
Over 2,000 housing units in Fountain of the Sun
Fountain of the Sun offers a variety of living options for prospective residents, from detached single-family homes with Spanish Mission architecture to condos. The community has approximately 2,300 units, many of which were built in the 1970s and 1980s and have undergone interior remodels and renovations. For those who prefer a smaller living space, there are 13 condo associations within the gated community. Single-family houses tend to have between two and four bedrooms and feature spacious floor plans. One-bedroom properties can fall below $100,000, and prices increase by about $100,000 per bedroom, up to about $500,000. Many homes come with covered carports or enclosed garages. Some residential streets are lined with sidewalks, and most yards feature desert shrubbery and palm trees.
Getting around Fountain of the Sun and Throughout Phoenix
Fountain of the Sun is an ideal neighborhood for those looking for quick access into Phoenix and the smaller surrounding cities. The 60 and 202 freeways are right next door, and public transportation is available via the Valley Metro nearby. Although the gated community is walkable, Siravo-Hamric mentions that the community itself has a local transportation service. For air travel, the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is an 11-mile drive south down the 202.
