Near the Usery Mountains and Apache Junction
At the base of the Usery Mountains, Northeast Mesa is where the Sonoran Desert’s tall saguaros blend with the streetlights of suburban subdivisions. “This area is very true to the desert landscape,” says Bryce Henderson, a Realtor with Four Peaks Brokerage Company who’s sold homes in the area for 12 years. “It appeals to people who want to be outdoors and take advantage of the nice weather we have nine or 10 months out of the year.” Usury Mountain Regional Park, the Salt River and Saguaro Lake are just to the north, providing plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing and boating. While Northeast Mesa is 32 miles from Downtown Phoenix, the 202 freeway is just west of the neighborhood, providing convenient access to the rest of the metro area. The small city of Apache Junction, roughly 3 miles away, is a hub of stores, restaurants and nightlife. Area houses of worship include East Valley Church of the Nazarene and Gospel Light Baptist Church.
Ranch-style homes with Superstition Mountain views
The desert landscape is on full display here — saguaro cacti tower over the community’s late 20th-century ranch-style homes, which sit far apart along dusty roads with views of the Usery Mountains to the north and the Superstition Mountains to the east. These homes sit on lots of a quarter-acre to 2 acres that are typically surrounded by cinderblock walls or chain-link fences; residents often use their extra yard space for backyard pools and recreational vehicle storage. Layouts range from 900 to 2,000 square feet with two to four bedrooms, and prices range from $270,000 to $750,000, depending on size, acreage and renovations.
Buyers can also find 21st-century new traditional homes with Spanish Revival influences like earth-toned stucco exteriors and arched doorways. These homes sit close together in subdivisions where sidewalks and streetlights are common. Layouts range from 1,000 to 3,200 square feet and three to five bedrooms; prices range from $350,000 to $760,000, plus monthly homeowners association fees between $40 and $200 that cover ground maintenance.
In the neighborhood’s north, custom homes of 2,500 to 4,000 square feet sit on lots of a quarter-acre to 2 acres. Many of these are horse properties, and depending on size, prices range from $775,000 to $1.3 million. In the south, gated 55-plus communities have manufactured homes with one to three bedrooms and layouts between 400 and 1,500 square feet. These homes cost between $8,000 and $130,000, depending on size and updates, plus monthly land leasing fees between $650 and $800.
Career Academies at Skyline High
The Mesa Unified School District earns an A-minus from Niche and is a school choice district. Local kids can choose to start school at the A-rated Franklin at Brimhall Elementary, or they might be zoned for the B-rated Sousa Elementary. They can then attend Smith Junior High and Skyline High; both earn a B. At Skyline High, students can join focused academies that give career experience in subjects including engineering and medicine. The school also offers Career and Technical Education courses in topics like computer science and automotive repair. Nearby private schools include the B-plus-rated Mesa Christian Academy for pre-kindergarten through Grade 12.
Near the 202
The 202 is just west of the neighborhood, leading 32 miles west to Downtown Phoenix, and Highway 60 is 3 miles south. “Our road system is designed very well,” Henderson says. “Something might be 25 miles away, but it’s all freeway driving, and our traffic’s not terrible.” With no public transportation, few bike lanes and limited sidewalks, most residents rely on their cars to get around. Mountain Vista Medical Center is around 3 miles south. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, which has domestic commercial flights, is 12 miles south, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a 25-mile trip.
Live music at The Handlebar Pub and Grill
Locals are close to plenty of stores and restaurants along Apache Trail to the south and in Apache Junction, about 3 miles southeast. The nearby Walmart makes running errands easy, and specialty stores like Tractor Supply Company and Big 5 Sporting Goods are nearby. Reptile Junction is the area’s go-to for pet supplies; visitors here are greeted by Rat, a friendly emu who wanders around the shop and appreciates back scratches.
The locally owned Mickey D’s Café is known for its diner-style breakfasts. At The Handlebar Pub and Grill, residents can choose from a large selection of bar food, mead and craft beer; the restaurant’s eclectic patio, decorated with string lights and a large giraffe sculpture, is a popular spot to see local bands. Home chefs can pick up local bread and produce at the Superstition Ranch Farmers Market, and other grocery stores include Safeway and Bashas’.
Over 29 miles of trails in Usery Mountain Regional Park
The over 3,600-acre Usery Mountain Regional Park is just north of the neighborhood, providing over 29 miles of trails through saguaro and wildflowers. The 3-mile Wind Cave Trail is one of the park’s most popular and leads to an elevated cave with views of the surrounding mountains and East Valley. The park’s archery range has 6 courses and around 100 targets, and it hosts over 30 tournaments each year. At the park’s nature center, families can learn about the region's wildlife. Rangers host regular guided hikes through the park, including the popular Creatures of the Night Walk, where hikers use black lights to help spot scorpions. Equestrians can go for a ride on the park’s trails, or they can head to P&M Arena, where members can practice or compete in barrel racing and gymkhana events that test a horse’s speed and agility. On hot days, residents can head about 16 miles north to Saguaro Lake, where fishing, kayaking and swimming are popular, or they can spend a lazy day tubing down the Salt River, 13 miles north.
The Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo
The Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo has drawn a big crowd to Apache Junction each February since 1971. The four-day festival includes a parade, a carnival with rides and games, and rodeo events like bull riding and roping. There are also regular events at Flatiron Community Park in Apache Junction; each month, families can come to free Movies in the Park to watch kid-friendly flicks outside, and there's a free monthly concert series from September through April.
Wildfire risk near Usery Mountain Regional Park
Homes here are close to undeveloped land in Usery Mountain Regional Park, putting them at a higher risk of wildfire. While residents are more likely to experience smoke from nearby fires than any direct effects, they can stay informed by downloading the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management’s app.
Flooding can also be a concern because homes here sit in the 500-year floodplain and have a moderate risk of flooding. Residents should stay aware during heavy rain and have an emergency plan in case of a flood.
