The spring training home to the Chicago Cubs
Situated along the banks of the Salt River is Riverview, a neighborhood that has grown greatly since the Chicago Cubs came to town. The Cubs started spring training at the neighborhood’s Sloan Park in 2014, and they’ve brought a lot more than baseball to this waterfront community. “Sloan Park is where the Cubs have Spring Training, and that brought a lot of business into the area,” says Kathy Ostermeyer of USA Realty, who has 24 years of experience. “Hotels and restaurants went up, and that brought jobs and an influx of people into the area.” Sloan Park is known locally as Wrigleyville West, paying homage to the Cubs’ regular-season home park in Chicago. Each spring, the Cubs head to Riverview, followed by thousands of fans, for two months of practice and exhibition games before the regular season. In 2023, Sloan Park averaged nearly 14,000 fans per game, the most of any spring training facility in the country. Fans can grab a hot dog and watch the Cubs face other Major League teams 20 times between mid-February and the end of March.
Tubing and rafting on the Salt River
Proximity to the Salt River means there’s always something to do outside in Riverview. Locals head to the river to go whitewater rafting or relax in tubes in the river’s calmer areas. Others launch boats on the river or fish for local trout. The Salt River Walking Path offers miles of scenic walking, while Riverview Park has a playground for children. The park also has a stocked fishing pond and shaded play areas to block the intense Arizona sun. For an indoor workout, residents visit Esporta Fitness. Golfers head to Mesa Country Club, while others take advantage of the club’s tennis courts and swimming pool.
Eating on the patio at Parilla Los Picos
Locals and visitors looking for authentic Mexican food go to Parrilla Los Picos. This rustic restaurant has patio seating with scenic views of the mountains in the distance. The Woodshed II is a sports bar with plenty of baseball memorabilia on the walls, including jerseys, photos and autographed bats. It’s an ideal spot to watch a game on TV and eat classic bar fare like chicken wings and potato skins. S&J Produce has a full selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and authentic Mexican products. For a more expansive grocery selection, Fry’s and Safeway both have locations off Main Street. Walmart sits off Rio Salado Parkway. There is plenty of retail, including a Home Depot and Bass Pro Shop off Highway 202, and the area is home to Cinemark Mesa 16, showing all the newest movies.
Ranch-style homes and townhouses
Single-family ranch-style homes in Riverview cost between $320,000 and $545,000 depending on size, while townhouses range between $115,000 and $290,000. A small number of large homes in gated communities can cost up to $1 million. “Factoring in the location and all the dining and entertainment, these prices are gems,” says Ostermeyer. Most homes are ranch-style builds with Craftsman influences from the 1970s that were renovated over the past few years. There are not many natural lawns in the neighborhood; instead, residents tend to utilize rock landscaping. Homes have private driveways, and some have garages for off-street parking. People walk their dogs down wide sidewalks, and nearby Highways 101 and 202 create some noise. Renters make up just over half the population in Riverview.
Students are involved at Westwood High
Children head to Mesa Public Schools, beginning at Whittier Elementary, which holds a B-minus rating on Niche and is noted for its diverse student population. The next stop is Carson Junior High, which has a C-plus rating. Westwood High School has a B-plus grade, and students pack the stands for sporting events. “Each volleyball match, there’s a large student turnout, and they always have a theme,” says Deb Lee, athletics administrator at Westwood High. “Earlier this year, they did a pool party theme, and everyone wore swimsuits and had floaties and goggles on. It’s really fun.”
Driving down Highway 101
To get around town, locals can hop on the Valley Metro, which has frequent stops along N. Alma School Road. Drivers can use Highways 101 or 202 for quick access to Interstate 10. “The two highways have far less traffic than most bigger roads in the area, and they are easy to get around,” says Ostermeyer. Phoenix is about 15 miles away, and Scottsdale is about 7 miles north.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
