Suburban neighborhood in a central Mesa location
West Enders, three miles from downtown Mesa, is best known for its late 20th-century homes and convenient location near the Salt River. Plus, it’s perfectly situated between two Major League Baseball ballparks: Sloan Park and Hohokam Stadium. “The other great asset of West Enders is it's close to all the freeways. You can get to so many places in such a short amount of time, it really makes living here a joy,” says Jeffry Schotz, a Realtor with West USA Realty. About a mile north is Route 202, and shopping and dining are within two miles along Country Club Drive and at Mesa Riverview. “They’ve got hotels, restaurants, Bass Pro Shops and a huge park at Riverview. The area is centrally located, and it’s easy to get around town,” says Aaron Carlson, a Realtor with Weichert, Realtors-Home Pro Realty, who has over 10 years of experience. Along with so many things to do in West Enders, there are also several houses of worship, including First Christian Church of Mesa, Banner Church and Queen of Peace Catholic Church and School.
Late 20th-century ranch-style homes with manicured lawns
Packed closely together along residential streets lined with sidewalks and manicured lawns dotted by palm and mesquite trees, West Enders’ homes are mostly late 20th-century ranch-style, a few with Spanish Revival-style details like tan stucco exteriors and terracotta-tiled roofs. These two- to four-bedroom homes have 1,000 to 3,000 square feet of living space and lots of 2,000 to 12,000 square feet; most have attached carports, while some offer street parking or the occasional attached garage. Prices typically range from $300,000 to $600,000, depending on a home’s size and desirable features like private pools, covered patios and newly renovated plumbing. Schotz says most homebuyers in this neighborhood are “looking for subdivisions with privacy, low-maintenance patio homes and perhaps a community with a clubhouse pool.” Some homes here are a part of local homeowners associations, like Colonial Manor, with a community pool and monthly dues of about $280. In the neighborhood’s northeast, two-bedroom condominiums from the late 20th-century in the Concorde community typically offer assigned parking and about 900 square feet of living space. Monthly HOA dues here are about $200 and grant access to a community pool, gym and tennis courts. Prices range from $200,000 to $300,000, depending on size.
Students pursue their passions at Westwood High
West Enders is part of the Mesa Unified School District, rated A-minus overall by Niche. Local kids can start at Whitman Elementary School, rated B-minus, before moving on to Carson Junior High School, rated C-plus. At the B-plus-rated Westwood High School, teens can explore their interests in extracurriculars like slam poetry, film production and robotics. Westwood High also offers career and technical education courses that prepare students for their future careers in fields like agriculture, computer science and family consumer sciences.
Getting around Mesa
Country Club Drive borders West Enders’ east end and later merges with Route 202 in the north, which loops around the Greater Phoenix Area. Downtown Mesa is about 2 miles south via Country Club Drive. Cars are essential for getting around, but residential streets are typically lined with sidewalks, bike lanes and Valley Metro bus stops. For medical needs, Banner Desert Medical Center is 5 miles southwest, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is 9 miles west.
Nearby pocket parks and playgrounds
Bordering West Enders’ north, Mesa Country Club has been a Phoenix-area staple since 1948. The private club features a lush, tree-lined 18-hole course, community pool and courts for pickleball and tennis. The 4-acre Evergreen Park is about a mile southeast, offering a playground, baseball diamond and courts for basketball and volleyball. Riverview Park’s about a mile east, known for its playground with a 50-foot-tall climbing tower, tilapia-stocked fishing lake and a splash pad that’s popular in the summer when temperatures regularly top 100 degrees. Near Riverview Park is Salt River, the local spot to float or raft down the river and bike or walk along the paved, 2-mile Rio Salado Pathway.
Shopping and dining at Mesa Riverview
About a mile east, Mesa Riverview is an outdoor shopping mall where residents can pick up groceries from Walmart and shop at department stores like Bass Pro Shops, Home Depot and Burlington. There are also many fast-food restaurants and casual dining chains, like IHOP and Cracker Barrel. “They have all the fast-food, retail plazas and shopping right there,” Carlson says. To catch the game, Mesa Drummer is a local sports bar and grill about a mile east where folks can enjoy craft beer and American comfort food. HG Coffee and Cafe is about 2 miles south along Country Club Drive, popular for its house-roasted coffee and hearty breakfast fare. Less than a mile further south, The Original Blue Adobe Grille is a Mesa mainstay for its elevated Mexican cuisine, like ancho chili-rubbed ribs and lobster tamales.
Nearby MLB spring training ballparks
In February, spring training for major league baseball begins, and West Enders is conveniently located between two major league training sites; Sloan Park is 2 miles west, and Hohokam Stadium is about 2 miles east, where the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics play, respectively. “It’s definitely known as the spring training area and it really comes to life during that time,” Carlson says. Carlson also recommends the concerts, art galleries and theatrical productions at the downtown Mesa Arts Center, about 2 miles south, which offers a year-round schedule of events and classes for the community.
