Historic attractions anchor a neighborhood filled with striking architecture
From its homes to its historic attractions, Country Club Section in Coral Gables is defined by striking architecture. “The neighborhood offers great access to the Biltmore, DeSoto Plaza and the Venetian Pool,” says Realtor Tere Shelton Bernace, broker/owner at Shelton and Stewart Realtors, which specializes in luxury home sales. The Biltmore Hotel, highlighted by its iconic tower, is a premier example of the Mediterranean Revival architecture for which Coral Gables is known. The tower overlooks the Biltmore Golf Course, built alongside the hotel in 1926. The structures surrounding the Venetian Pool, built in 1924, are another example of the Mediterranean Revival style. The Venetian is the only pool on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby DeSoto Plaza is a charming historical landmark that features a neo-baroque fountain built in 1925.

A variety of homes with Mediterranean Revival influences on large lots
Influences of the Mediterranean Revival style is seen throughout the neighborhood. Decorative facades and fountains are common features among the oldest homes. It’s common to see terra cotta roofs gracing ranch-style homes. “It’s not the newest part of Coral Gables; most of the homes were built between the 1940s and 1960s,” says Belinda Sime, owner of Sime Realty Corporation and a Realtor who has sold several homes in the neighborhood. The teardown trend has hit the neighborhood, but the rebuilds going up tend to mirror the styles of existing architecture. “The city makes the homeowners add some sort of character,” Sime says.
Because the neighborhood is home to two exclusive country clubs, golf course homes are an attractive option. Three-bedroom homes typically range from $1 million to $3.5 million. Larger homes from $4 million to $8.5 million. Waterfront homes start at $15 million. Luxury townhomes designed in the Mediterranean Revival style are a new addition. They list for more than $6 million. Prospective homebuyers should be aware that the neighborhood's location puts it at risk of flooding and wind damage, especially during hurricane season.
