Cuban community thrives in Essex Village
Neighborhoods like Essex Village are the heart of Hialeah, the City of Progress. Spread across narrow numbered streets are palm and fruit trees, colorful quaint houses and a close-knit Latino community. “A lot of people move to Hialeah, or move back to Hialeah, because their family is there,” says Hialeah native Joel Freis, a Realtor with eXp Realty.
Since the first wave of Cuban exiles made a home for themselves here in the 1960s, the city has become a welcoming Hispanic melting pot with a Spanish-speaking population of 90%. Many streets, parks and monuments surrounding the neighborhood are dedicated to Cuban heroes and leaders. Several local churches and restaurants where Latino communities thrive are both in and around Essex Village. The neighborhood is also home to the original Vicky Bakery, which has since become a family-owned South Florida chain and a favorite for authentic Cuban puff pastries, locally known as pastelitos.
