Dual lakes within neighborhood streets

Developed around the glittering waters of Lake Gwen and Lake Joan, the gated community of Lakes on the Green’s name is more than apt. Featuring Spanish Revival architecture along its streets and with plenty of palm trees lining the shores of the water, the neighborhood on the outskirts of Hialeah is a picturesque establishment on the country’s southeastern peninsula. “Southern Florida has one of the most unique cultures in all of the country,” says Adam Alonso, a Realtor with Keller Williams Capital Realty. “There’s a big Caribbean influence from all the neighboring islands, it has a rich history and there’s a lot of old Spanish architecture. It’s an eclectic demographic of people, with residents from all over the world.”

Intricate architecture around the lakes

Even from above, it’s easy to tell what style influences populate Lakes on the Green. The red barrel tiles of Spanish Revival architecture beam skyward, making up the roofs of most of the neighborhood’s homes. Prices within Lakes on the Green rarely drop below $500,000, and most typically range between $600,000 and $800,000. Other properties around its pair of lakes have sold for higher and closer to $1 million. Pools are relatively common in the area’s backyards, and a number of the homes have lakefront backyards leading right down to the water. “The area of Miami, Hollywood and Broward is growing,” Alonso says. It’s expanding because of the prices farther east and in Miami, and it's become a really nice place to live because it has new homeowners and renters. The homes are generally similar, but it’s an eclectic mix of different property styles.”

Education outside the neighborhood

Though no schools are located within the direct boundaries of Lakes on the Green, students can begin their educational journey at Spanish Lake Elementary School, which scores a B rating on Niche. After fifth grade at Spanish Lake, enrollment moves on to Lawton Chiles Middle School, which receives a grade of B-minus, and then to Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School for grades nine through 12. Ranked within the top 400 high schools in the state and regarded for its college prep programs, Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High scores a B with Niche and its clubs include yearbook, drama and chess organizations.

Catching fly balls near the water

Country Lake Park is located across NW 87th Avenue, offering the opportunity for visitors to play a game of baseball alongside its tree-lined lake. The diamond isn’t the only amenity it has, though, as a pair of basketball courts, a playground and a walking path all lie on Country Lake Park’s property as well. Spanish Lake Park isn’t too much further to the east, and the smaller open space allows dogs and has a picnic area.

Side-by-side shopping centers

Two shopping centers, Sedano’s Plaza and Gardens Square, are located near Lakes on the Green. Retail, both local and chains, as well as local food and restaurants, can be found in each. At Sedano’s Plaza, Boss Tapas Burger & Brew offers a tropical twist on the regular cheeseburger alongside a beauty salon, a Carrabba’s and Vicky Bakery. Sedano’s Supermarkets is within the plaza, while just across NW 87th Avenue is Gardens Square Shopping Center. There, shoppers can find a Publix and CVS for general grocery or home needs along with a Dunkin’ and the family-owned Polo Norte, which has authentic Cuban food on its menu. “It’s a short drive from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, and Hard Rock Stadium is maybe 15 minutes away,” Alonso says. “That’s a really big draw since there’s always concerts and Dolphins games going on there.”

Adjacent interstates and turnpikes

The interchange of Interstate 75 and the Ronald Reagan Turnpike make up most of the northern half of Lakes on the Green. Residents do have to drive about 10 minutes north to go south on the turnpike, but access to NW 186th Street means the on-ramp to the I-75 is just a few minutes away. I-75’s six-state span comes to an end farther south in the state, but the vibrant scenes of downtown Miami are just over half an hour away to the southeast. Fort Lauderdale is about the same distance to the northeast. “The area is only about half an hour from the beach,” Alonso says. “That’s always a huge draw. There’s also proximity to multiple airports, which is good for people coming in and out of the area.”
