“The Harlem of the South”
The neighborhood of Historic Overtown, located blocks from the Florida coast, is a community that reflects the spirit, creativity and history of Miami’s rich Black heritage. Once known as the “Harlem of the South,” this neighborhood fell on hard times after the construction of Interstate 95 displaced about 15,000 residents and caused many Black-owned businesses to close. But these days Overtown is reclaiming its place as a destination for art, food and culture. “Overtown was the heart of [Miami’s] Black community before they drove Interstate 95 through it,” says Robbie Bell, a local broker associate with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “It was the place to be.” Bell says the name came from how people referred to the community back when Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong stayed there. Those artists would perform in Miami Beach, where they were not accepted offstage, and then head “over town” to more welcoming arms. Though the neighborhood has struggled with crime in recent years – scoring a 9 out of 10 on the CAP Index – the community has also taken strides in revitalization, especially with programs like the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency, Going Overtown and the Mourning Family Foundation, which bring residents programs and opportunities.

Apartments, condos and townhouses
Despite being an urban neighborhood, Overtown has quite a bit of greenery along its gridded streets; its leafy trees and grassy lots diffuse some of that South Florida sun. Overtown is mostly home to renters, so low-rise, stucco-sided apartments and condominiums comprise the majority of properties in the area, alongside a smattering of townhouses. Many of these multifamily units were built in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Single-family homes are few and far between, but demolitions coupled with new construction have brought some more into the community. Overall list prices range from $212,000 for, say, a two-bedroom, one-bathroom townhouse needing some TLC to $1.1 million for a move-in ready, newly constructed single-family home.

The historic Booker T. Washington High
Overtown residents are served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. There are a few different schools where students can get their academic start depending on where in the community they live. Those on the south side attend Frederick Douglass Elementary, while those due east begin school at Phillis Wheatley. From there, they can go to Jose De Diego Middle. Each of these schools has a C rating on Niche. Rated B-minus, Booker T. Washington is the last step on this K-12 track. Home of the Tornadoes, this school was the first high school that served black residents in South Florida. It was the center of black teen education from Palm County all the way to the Keys. Students at this historic school can apply to individual academies focusing on engineering, information technology, entrepreneurship, hospitality and tourism or the Air Force JROTC. Each pathway provides professional development, hands-on learning opportunities and specialized courses.
The Overtown Youth Center and Gibson Park
“The grand opening of the new Overtown Youth Center was this past weekend,” Bell says. “Ne-Yo performed, and Alonzo Mourning was there to speak, so a lot of ballers were there. Tracy Wilson Mourning was there, too. They partnered together to build the youth center.” The Overtown Youth Center is one of the neighborhood’s newest additions, home to various programs for children, teenagers and parents. The local library and Gibson Park sit right beside the new youth center. Gibson Park is a popular community green space with athletic facilities, including baseball and football fields, and a public pool with a snack bar.
Green Haven Project cultivates community gardens in areas with low access to quality produce. Close to Gibson Park, the Green Haven Project’s Overtown garden offers residents fresh veggies and fruits and fun activities.

For day-to-day shopping, convenient corner stores are throughout the area, and a Publix just opened on the neighborhood’s west side.

The Lyric Theater and other Overtown landmarks
Founded in 1913, the Historic Lyric Theater became famous for hosting legendary talents such as Sammy Davis Jr., Louis Armstrong, Josephine Baker and more. Today, the theater continues its proud legacy by showcasing local artists in a beautifully renovated facility owned by the Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida.
The Overtown Performing Arts Center, formerly Ebenezer Methodist Church, one of the neighborhood’s oldest churches, hosts performances and special events. The area’s vibrant art scene also includes stunning murals, such as “Ode to Overtown,” that depict Overtown’s story throughout the years.
The Dana A. Dorsey House, once owned by Florida’s first Black millionaire, includes features from the original home, having been renovated following hurricane damage in the 1990s.
