If you’re looking for “the best of the best in the middle of it all,” look no further than the Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands, says local Realtor Jennifer Kaiser with Kaiser & Associates Realty LLC, who has lived in this neighborhood of Miami since 1988. “For security and location, you can’t beat it,” she says.

Hibiscus Island is so hard to reach that it can only be accessed by boat or road crossing Palm Island. The front gates of these island communities are staffed by Miami Beach police, too, Kaiser says. Star Island, which has its own security, is closest to Miami Beach, and all the islands are accessible via the MacArthur Causeway. By comparison, the Venetian Islands to the north have no gated security.

This cluster of manmade islands features some of the most luxurious homes in the world, ranging from 6,000 square feet to 15,000 square feet, designed in Mediterranean, Colonial and Modern styles. “Many offer stunning views of Miami,” says broker associate Jill Eber with the Jills Zeder Group. The islands are “a great community for boaters because you’re minutes from the ocean,” Eber says. Most homes have private docks and boat lifts. Nearly all on the waterfront — single-family homes range from $4 million to $50 million. Because of its tropical landscape, Star Island is a part of the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve. Many homes surround the oval-shaped Star Island Drive, which contains the lush, green 5.1-acre Buoy Park, a favorite jogger spot. In addition to its waterfront homes, Palm Island features a public park with tennis and basketball courts that is shared with Hibiscus. Over half a century ago, Palm was a mecca for big-named entertainers, such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, who performed at the world-famous Latin Quarter Nightclub.

Created in the early 1920s, the Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands are a short drive from everything Miami offers — downtown offices, Wynwood and the Design District, Miami Beach nightlife and Miami International Airport. The islands have been called home by some of the most famous people in the world, including musicians Gloria Estefan and Enrique Iglesias and basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal — even the notorious mobster Al Capone lived on Palm Island. “From the ’80s onward, the islands attracted young entrepreneurs and artists because they’re so close to South Beach,” says real estate broker Sophie Delaplaine with The Jack Coden Group of Keller Williams Eagle Realty. These “newly moneyed stars” were attracted to South Beach and all its glamor — a place to be and be seen — where you could have a boat and parties on the dock. “In such a small community, it’s easy to meet people and make friends,” Delaplaine says.

While no schools are on the islands, Miami-Dade County Public Schools are nearby and include South Pointe Elementary, Nautilus Middle and Miami Beach High. Each received an above-average grade from Niche. In fact, South Pointe Elementary, which scored a B+, is an International Baccalaureate school with the mission to supply its nearly 500 students with personalized learning experiences.

For shopping needs, the Fifth & Alton Mall, which has a Publix, Ross and TJ Maxx, is just across the bridge in Miami Beach, and Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are only a short drive farther up Alton Road. Residents often walk the 1.9 miles to this shopping area.

If you’ve been dreaming of a neighborhood with island appeal, a prime location and a famous and infamous history, look no further than the Star, Palm and Hibiscus Islands. This trio of islands has it all, including some of the most luxurious real estate in all of Maimi.
