On Hialeah's north side, HOA-free single-family properties fan out around gorgeous, glittering lakes and shape the community of Westhaven Heights. Now, while the majority of properties in Westhaven Heights are landlocked, folks can still get their boats, kayaks and canoes on the water at Amelia Earhart Park, a 515-acre park that's almost more water than it is land. Located less than 5 miles — or less than 10 minutes — away, this nearby recreational mecca has it all: bike trails, a playground, a fishing pier, a dog park, athletic fields, paddleboats, lush greenery and so much more. Of course, if you're just looking for a nearby spot to play some basketball or simply enjoy the balmy South Florida weather, G. C. Sparks Park, named after a former Hialeah mayor, is right in Westhaven Heights and spans approximately 9 acres. This neighborhood nook features tennis courts, artistically painted basketball courts, a playground, a baseball field, a multi-purpose field and a shaded pavilion.

As is typical in much of South Florida, you'll find mainly ranch-style homes along the sidewalk- and palm tree-lined streets of Westhaven Heights. That said, there is architectural variation between Spanish-inspired, Minimal Traditional and Midcentury modern designs. You'll find that many of these single-family properties date back to the 1950s and 1960s, giving them all authentic old Florida charm, especially when framed by tropical flora. A detached single-family home in Westhaven Heights can cost you anything between the high $400,000s to $840,000. A budget of $550,000 can land you a four-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,764-square-foot ranch-style home. Common features include driveways, garages and in-ground pools, or more than enough room for an in-ground pool to be put in. It's Florida, after all.

Plenty of options for dining and shopping sit less than a mile south of Westhaven Heights, just across the canal. Westland Mall is jam-packed with fast-food options and well-known retailers, ranging from H&M and Aéropostale to Bath & Bodyworks and JC-Penny. This mall sits across the street from a Publix, and more stores that are convenient for day-to-day errands can be found less than a mile north of the neighborhood. And if you're feeling curious about local flavor, El Castillo De Las Frutas is an excellent example of the flavorful eateries surrounding Westhaven Heights. This homestyle Cuban restaurant boasts fast service, great prices and even better portions. Be sure to pair one of their delicious fruit juices with whatever item you order, whether it’s a classic Cuban sandwich or chicharrónes.

Westhaven Heights students can get their academic start at Marcus A. Milam K-8 Center. From there they can attend Palm Springs Middle School for grades six through eight or filter right into Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High after graduating from eighth grade. Rated with a B on Niche, Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High is home to a few magnet programs, such as the Legal Studies Academy. This program enriches students with the skills and coursework that will give them a leg up on the post-secondary pre-law track and any law-related fields; other magnet programs include the iPrep program and the Digital Media Technology and Entrepreneurship Academy.

Not too far from major highways Interstate 95 and the Palmetto Expressway, Westhaven Heights is a neighborhood worth exploring when moving to South Florida.
