Sidewalk-lined streets and residential Middleton charm

Covering a small cluster of winding streets just west of Lake Mendota, Stonefield is a relatively quiet pocket of Middleton. “It’s all established homes, so there are a lot of retirees who have lived here for a long time, but the other side of that is there are also a lot of young families turning over the neighborhood,” says Stonefield Neighborhood Association President Travis Weiss. Thanks to plentiful sidewalks, annual block parties and friendly faces, residents here tend to get to know their neighbors. “We have runners, we have dog walkers and we have a lot of residential pools, so you’ll find people out and about on weekends,” Weiss adds. With spacious homes, neighborhood events at Stonefield Park and a highly rated elementary school a few minutes’ walk from residents’ front steps, this neighborhood provides a firmly rooted suburban feel.

Late-20th-century homes with surplus square footage

Homes tend to run on the spacious side with 2,000 to 4,000 square feet and are priced from roughly $500,000 to $1 million. There are also a handful of condos next to Stonefield Park, which list between $560,000 and $610,000.

Neighborhood events and after-school fun at Stonefield Park

Sidewalks connect homes to Stonefield Park, a 2-acre green space with a couple of tennis courts, a sand volleyball pit and a playground. It’s the primary place to stay active and also happens to be where the Stonefield Neighborhood Association hosts its events. “We have a big Fourth of July celebration with a bike parade ending at the park with games and activities for kids,” Weiss says. “We also do Fall Frolic, which is a cul-de-sac party. We have several cul-de-sacs in our neighborhood, so we’ll have social gatherings with a fire and some wine and beer.” Alongside other holiday celebrations and seasonal events, small social clubs often spring up around the neighborhood for residents to unite over shared interests such as reading, card games or riding bikes.

Explore Downtown Middleton or celebrate birthdays at the Nitty Gritty

About a mile north is Middleton’s recently thriving downtown area, a small yet dynamic stretch of locally owned restaurants, eclectic boutiques and laidback hangout spots. “For as small as downtown is — it’s maybe a six- to eight-block area — there’s a lot of nice new things to do there,” Weiss says. He adds that Italian eatery Villa Dolce and the Free House Pub, with its casual setting and free-flowing craft brews, are a couple of his favorite downtown stops. Within the neighborhood is the Nitty Gritty, the self-proclaimed “official birthday place” where locals celebrate with burgers and beer. On their special day, patrons are invited to ring the birthday bell and get to take home a souvenir mug.
