A verdant oasis amid the oil fields
The most common sight on the drive into Green Tree is dry, sprawling fields dotted with hulking oil pumps, evidence of the city’s robust petroleum industry. However, upon entering the community, located about 9 miles from downtown, the landscape transforms into a suburban enclave with green front yards and medians. Backyards are equally landscaped, many sitting along an expansive golf course, Green Tree’s marquee amenity. “There are other communities that are a little secluded like we are, but the one thing we have is the golf course,” says Jennifer Pender, a resident and current HOA president of Green Tree North, one of two subdivisions that comprise the community. “It’s the only golf course in Midland you can live on.” In a city where it can feel stifling hot and dry, especially in the summer, the abundance of grass is a huge draw to the community, along with its traditional neighborhood feel. “The whole neighborhood gets to know each other, everyone so freely waves, people sit out in their cul-de-sac in lawn chairs visiting. There’s a lot of camaraderie here,” Pender says.
The Green Tree neighborhood is intertwined with a 27-hole golf course that locals love to use.

Brick custom homes in a range of sizes and styles
While the homes in Green Tree are brick custom contemporary builds, they are far from cookie-cutter. Each house exhibits its own influences, including ranch-style, Tudor-inspired and New Traditional. Homes were originally built in the 1980s, and while some owners choose to keep their houses intact and renovate, others do complete teardowns and build from scratch. Most homes feature three or four bedrooms, though it’s possible to find five-bedroom builds, and square footage ranges from 2,000 to 5,000. Rebuilds or homes with extensive renovations can range from $800,000 to $1.4 million, especially if they sit on the golf course or one of the community’s lakes. Homes with fewer upgrades can run between $400,000 to $700,000, with more expensive homes sitting on bigger yards. Sidewalks are abundant in Green Tree North but hard to come by in Green Tree South. Still, the streets are wide and quiet, where it’s common to find residents walking their dogs and kids out riding their bikes. Many residents have golf carts, which they use to zoom around the community, even on main thoroughfares like Greentree Boulevard, which has a dedicated golf cart lane.

Area kids served by the Midland ISD
The Midland Independent School District serves the area, and many kids start their education at Fasken Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through sixth grade and has a B on Niche. From there, they head to Abell Junior High School, which has a B-minus, the C-rated Legacy Freshman High School for ninth grade, and the B-minus rated Legacy Senior High School for tenth through 12th grade. For years, freshman have been attending school separately from their peers, but that will soon be a thing of the past; in early 2024, a referendum passed to build two new high schools large enough to combine all four grades. The nearby private schools that serve the neighborhood include Bynum School, which serves students with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities, and Midland Classical Academy, a faith-based school serving kindergarten through 12th grade. Students who want to stay close to home after graduation can attend Midland College, a public community college located about five miles from the neighborhood. Midland College offers over a hundred associate degrees, certificate programs, and a bachelor's degree in organizational management.
Country club members enjoy many amenities, including golf
Members of the Green Tree Country Club have access to many outdoor amenities. The club offers a 27-hole golf course, a driving range and a teaching center that is popular with golf enthusiasts in the neighborhood. Members also challenge each other on the tennis courts and cool off at the pool and, for younger kids, the splash pad. Residents who don’t have club memberships can find many parks throughout the city. One of the closest is John P. Butler Youth Sports Complex, which, as the name suggests, is a hotspot for youth baseball and soccer but also includes two playgrounds and plenty of green space to run and play. Centennial Park, located in downtown Midland about 9 miles away, also contains a large splash pad for kids that is often packed on hot days.
Green Tree residents' favorite pastime is a friendly game of golf among neighbors.

Additional well-known retailers like Target, TJ Maxx & HomeGoods, and Market Street are located close to the mall. Those looking for a fun night out can head downtown to Wall Street, about 9 miles away, and dine at new, hip restaurants like Pi Social, popular for its New American style dishes and bustling indoor/outdoor bar, and Little Bohemian, which offers upscale takes on traditional comfort foods like deviled eggs and macaroni and cheese. The Green Tree Country Club dining room is often a popular weeknight dinner destination for members; they can leave the car at home and travel there by golf cart.

Residents enjoy neighborhood and city-run events
While each side of the community has its own HOA-run events, they extend invitations to each other so everyone can celebrate together. Green Tree North hosts a Christmas tree lighting event each December with Santa, and Green Tree South regularly brings in food trucks. The Green Tree Country Club hosts an annual 4th of July event for members. Non-members can participate in the city’s 4th of July event, The Star-Spangled Salute, which includes fireworks, live music and the Children’s Sidewalk Parade, where kids from three to 12 years old ride decorated tricycles, bikes and electric toy cars around Centennial Park.
