Wedgewood Park’s gently curving, wide streets give the neighborhood a suburban feel while still being close to central Midland amenities. Some residents may be able to walk to the neighborhood elementary school, park or even some nearby restaurants. If not, amenities are a short drive away. “In Midland, everything is convenient to shopping and dining,” says Kerri Payne James, owner of The Agency KPJ who sells all over Midland. “When I have people coming from Houston, I tell them, ‘You can get anywhere in Midland in 10 to 15 minutes.’”
Charming older homes built in the '60s and '70s
Homes built between the early 1960s and late ‘70s range between about 1,500 and 3,500 square feet and most sit on less than a quarter of an acre. Ranch-style homes with lower roof lines come in different shades of brick, giving the neighborhood some variety. One- or two-car garages are a common feature among properties here. “The average age in Midland is about 35 years old and a lot of the younger people coming in want the charm of older homes,” James says. “A lot of the houses have been totally redone.” Single-family homes start at $274,000 and go up to $465,000.
Schooling options with Midland Independent School District
Located in the neighborhood, Rusk Elementary earns a B-minus from Niche. Alamo Junior High and Legacy Freshman High, which serves ninth graders, both receive C grades. Legacy Senior High covers 10th through 12th grades and earns a C-plus. Midland Independent School District’s STEM+M program works in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine. Students can earn certifications and college credit in areas including biopharmaceutical science, veterinary medicine, and speech pathology. The district offers transfer and magnet options, and there are a few K-12 private schools in the area. Trinity School of Midland earns an A-plus, while Midland Christian School has an A-minus.
Smaller neighborhood parks and downtown events
Rusk Park is a public, nearly 5-acre green space located near the elementary school. There are a handful of other neighborhood parks within a few miles of Wedgewood Park, including Trinity Park, which got a new playground in 2021. In downtown Midland, Centennial Park has a dog park, splash pad and game tables. It’s the spot for community events like Chalk the Block and Movies at the Park. “During Christmas, they have a really large display of Christmas lights that gets bigger and better every year,” says Braun Burkholder, Realtor with The Agency KPJ who has lived in Midland for close to 40 years. “We have a mayor that's younger and has small kids, so she’s bringing a lot of things to do here in Midland.”
A short drive to shopping plazas and local eateries
Wedgewood Park has large retailers like Walmart, as well as local eateries all within a few miles. There are a few restaurants along Midland Road, including Oscar’s Super Burrito, a locally owned lunch and breakfast spot. Texas Pride Plaza is one of several shopping centers in the area. It’s home to CreamLab N7, which serves nitrogen ice cream, and the traditional Chinese restaurant Szechuan House. United Supermarkets is across the street and Texas-favorite HEB is also close by. Midland Park Mall is the area's only mall and includes JCPenney and Dillard’s.
Getting around on major roads, buses and airplanes
Midland's downtown is about 5 miles away and has been consistently growing over the past few years. State Route 250, also known as The Loop, intersects with Interstate 20, which runs from Reeves County all the way east to South Carolina. Along Midland Drive and West Wadley Avenue, there are Midland Odessa Urban Transit District, also known as EZ-Rider, bus stops. Midland International Air and Space Port is around 11 miles away on Interstate 20, while Midland Memorial Hospital is around 3 miles away.
