West End is centrally located and preserves history
West End is a Midland community that preserves the city’s history and culture. Home to the Museum of the Southwest, the neighborhood cherishes the oil hub’s frontier spirit and continued energy-based economy. With a central location, West End is a short drive from shopping, dining and medical services. Plus, the neighborhood offers established homes, meaning lots are grassy, green and mature. “Homes in this area don’t stay on the market long,” says Realtor Daina Perkins with eXp Realty, who was born and raised in Midland. “They’re nice, usually renovated on the inside, and it is a very affordable area.”
Discovering Midland’s history at nearby cultural spaces
The Museum of the Southwest is in the neighborhood and explores Midland’s history and cultural heritage. Established in 1966, the museum showcases the city’s transformation from a railroad stop and oil boomtown to a community rooted in tradition and ambition. Multiple buildings span the landscaped campus centered around the preserved Turner Mansion. Within the 1937 brick home, the Turner Memorial Art Museum features rotating and permanent exhibits of regional and national significance. Works range from those of members of the Taos Society of Artists to pieces by Norman Rockwell and other American icons. Adding the Lissa Noël Wagner Wing’s 11 galleries in 1987 created a modern touch in the museum, bringing contemporary exhibits. The Fredda Turner Durham Children’s Museum fosters learning in science, culture and the arts through interactive exhibits, while the Marian Blakemore Planetarium – one of West Texas’s few public planetariums – offers immersive stargazing experiences.
A few blocks north of the museum, the Bush Family Home State Historic Site offers a glimpse into the early lives of one of America’s most influential political families. From 1951 to 1955, the residence was home to President George H. W. Bush, first lady Barbara Bush, and their children, including future President George W. Bush. The house has been meticulously restored to reflect its 1950s appearance, and visitors can explore George W.’s wood-paneled childhood bedroom.
Homes with views of the city
In West End, lots are larger than nearby areas, and the gridded streets are so flat that locals can see Midland’s skyline in the distance. Fences surround many landscaped backyards, and above-ground powerlines line the sidewalks. The neighborhood’s small cottage can cost about $225,000, while larger ranch-style homes can sell for roughly $520,000.
Green space in the Texas desert
West End may be in the arid West Texas desert, but nearby parks ensure residents can access some green space. There are two small pocket parks in the neighborhood. Haley Park is within walking distance of some homes and features an open, grassy area that’s great for dog walks or picnics. On Washington Avenue, Elkin Park is a bit larger and has paved trails weaving past a playground, picnic tables and a lighted soccer field. Dennis the Menace Park, just west of the neighborhood, has a tree-top, airplane and baseball-themed playgrounds, as well as play areas mimicking the wild west.
Shopping and dining a short drive away
West End is located near many local shopping and dining options. Montecito Bar & Grill is just south of the neighborhood and serves large portions of Mexican cuisine, while The Bar serves pub grub and draft beers from its relaxed interior, where the game is always on and live music plays. A Walmart Supercenter sits about 3 miles south, and a Lowe’s Mercado grocery store is about 2 miles northeast. The Midland Park Mall is about 4 miles north and features over 90 stores, including popular brands like American Eagle and Old Navy. For medical services, Midland Memorial Hospital is just north.
Students attend Midland Independent School District
Students are zoned for the Midland Independent School District. They can attend South Elementary School, which gets a C-minus from Niche, before San Jacinto Junior High, which receives a C-plus. Next, students may go to Midland Freshman High School, which earns a C, before Midland High School, which receives a C-plus and offers an International Baccalaureate program.
Getting around West End
West End is centrally located, meaning residents are short distances from shopping, dining, medical services and schools. An entrance to U.S. Interstate 20 lies about 3 miles south of the neighborhood, allowing residents to travel through the state, including 300 miles west to Fort Worth, easily. “People in Midland are used to driving,” Perkins says. “We’re 5 hours from everything – El Paso, Austin. Getting in the car is no big deal.” Odessa, the next town over, is about 20 miles away. “People from Midland go to Odessa all the time and vice versa for shopping, dining or work,” Perkins says. Buses run along West Wall Street, a major city thoroughfare that runs along the neighborhood’s northern boundary. Midland International Air & Space Port is about 10 miles southwest of West End.
