Armory Village is a neighborhood in Millbury, Massachusetts, about 7 miles south of Worcester and 40 miles west of Boston. The community has a small-town feel, with modest homes surrounded by greenery, a charming downtown and neighbors that gather for haunted hayrides in the fall and Little League games in the spring. “Millbury is a very close community,” says Claire Rainville, a Realtor with Re/Max Executive Realty and Millbury resident for over 20 years. “It has a nice shopping area. Hospitals and train stations are also close, so it attracts all groups. There’s even an old-fashioned movie theater in town.” Plus, access to Route 146, Interstate 90 and public transportation allows locals to travel to the largest cities in the state with ease.

Many houses feature typical New England architectural facets, like gable-front roofs, porches or bay windows. Armory Village Revitalization Project updates downtown Millbury
Downtown Millbury is just north of the neighborhood. This quaint New England town center features a central common, the Millbury Public Library and restaurants. The Armory Village Revitalization Project has worked to build a more cohesive downtown district with a focus on sustainability. Improvements include the installation of rain gardens, porous pavers and trees, as well as the construction of two pedestrian plazas and a widened sidewalk. These changes accommodate residents who spend time shopping, dining or hanging out downtown. Locals can grab a coffee and a pastry from Mykonos Café and Bakery, sip drinks at Millbury Old Time Inn, grocery shop at Goretti’s or watch a movie at the vintage Elm Draught House Cinema, a historic theatre with a concession stand serving beer and wine. About 2 miles northwest are the Shops at Blackstone Valley, a strip mall with big-box stores, including Target, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble, along with chain restaurants such as Cold Stone Creamery, Longhorn Steakhouse and Qdoba. For medical services, Saint Vincent Hospital is about 8 miles north.

The Millbury Youth Camp is located on 13 wooded acres in Armory Village and puts on events for kids throughout the year, from family movie nights to the Annual Easter Egg Hunt. However, the camp’s most popular festivity comes in October, when friends and first dates wander the grounds, ready to be scared during the Spooky Acres Haunted Hayride and Trail of Terror. Across the street, the Woolie World playground has ADA-accessible swings and sound-play features. The Millbury Little League is also in Armory Village and hosts games during baseball season. North of the neighborhood, Dorothy Pond spans 148 acres. On the calm, glassy water, locals can fish, kayak or take scenic strolls by the shore. Many folks also use the area as a picnic spot, either taking a day to relax by the water or hosting small parties. The nearly 180-acre Martha Deering Wildlife Management Area is just west of the pond, and visitors hunt, bike or fish in the nature preserve’s wooded marshes. The nearby Colton Road Conservation Area features a nearly 3-mile narrow trail popular with mountain bikers looking for technical training or those wanting a more challenging hike.
