A close community in the town that paper made
The need to create paper mills in areas with plentiful wood and water resources made the founding of East Millinocket inevitable. With the mill's closure in 2015, the town was able to evolve into a quiet community full of friendly faces just a short drive from the Appalachian Trail. The neighborhood starts with Main Street and grows north, with mid-1900s raised ranches lining the quiet sidewalk lined streets. The town also has several schools and dining options less than a mile away, so residents can easily walk or drive to daily necessities. “It is a sleepy old town with a slower lifestyle and a fantastic community,” says James Spear, an associate broker with RE/MAX Collaborative who has been serving the area since 2020. “But the area around the town is known as the ‘gateway to the north’ with Mount Katahdin and the Appalachian Trail right there, so there is a lot of activity and excitement for outdoor activities and recreation.”

Raised ranches on quiet Maine roads
Despite the town’s small size, East Millinocket has a large number of homes with no shortage of lawn space. Cape Cod, raised ranch, and New Englander houses built in the early to mid-1900s make up a majority of the market, most of which are set closer to the front of the street, allowing for larger backyards that are often home to mature maple and elm trees. Spear also says the community is home to some newer developments from the 1990s with larger lawns than other homes in the area. Raised ranches and manufactured homes in the neighborhood range between $50,000 and $100,000, and newer ranch-style and Cape Cod prices commonly range from $140,000 to around $350,000.

Sports and trails along the Penobscot River
Most of East Millinocket’s recreation is located at the northern end of town. Surrounding the high school, there is a community pool, playset, and several sports fields for both school and recreational teams to play on. Residents can also head to the nearby Medway Veterans Memorial Park, which has a boat ramp and several picnic tables with views of the Penobscot River. “I take my dogs there all the time to let them run around in the water,” Spear says. The river and nearby lakes also make the area popular for fishing, with the water commonly filled with wild brook trout. While hiking and trails dominate Maine in the warmer months, the town is also a popular spot in the winter for those who enjoy snowmobiling. “A lot of people choose to get second homes here just to store their snow sleds and other equipment, kind of like a vacation home,” Spear says.

Eight miles away in Millinocket, guests can enjoy homemade donuts and English muffins at the Appalachian Trail Café. “I used to go there every Sunday after church,” Spear says. Summerfest and Marathons
The East Millinocket community comes together each year in July for Summerfest. The event is a four-day festival ranging from bounce houses to a town-wide yard sale and several food and artisan vendors in the park. In the winter, residents can also head to Millinocket to participate in The Millinocket Marathon & Half, which started to help support the town after the mill's closing. This event has spread beyond the local community, and “people come from all over to run in it,” Spear says.
