A diverse community with city access

With direct access to multiple major highways and one of Milwaukee's top public schools, Castle Manor is a convenient South Side neighborhood with a varied population. Seeing its heaviest development from the 1950s to 1980s, Castle Manor welcomed an influx of Eastern Europeans and Latinos looking to call Milwaukee home. Thanks to the 1982 establishment of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee across Interstate 41, more new faces joined the diversified neighborhood. Cultural pride is reflected in the restaurants of the area, while another type of pride is reflected in the homes. Part of the Garden District of the city, Castle Manor residents tend to their yards, participate in perennial exchanges and attend lectures hosted by noted gardeners. Lawns are trimmed with shaped shrubs, flowering trees and garden gnomes that wave to locals from stone-lined mulch beds. Bordered by convenient amenities like highways, shopping strips and parks, Castle Manor is still as welcoming as it was in 1950. It is so welcoming that when houses go up for sale, they tend to sell fast – lasting less than three weeks on the market.

A nationally rated high school

Tucked within Castle Manor's residential streets is Reagan High School. Rated an A-plus by Niche.com and widely considered one of the top high schools in the city, it also landed on US News & World Report's list of best high schools in the country for ten years straight. "There's a very inclusive environment here, and it's very academically driven," says Bryann Stengard, a social worker at Reagan. Reagan Huskies can access a comprehensive International Baccalaureate curriculum and earn college credits before graduation. The high school also hosts one of the only events in Castle Manor called Hope Squad. "Students and community members participate in a walk-run for suicide prevention and awareness throughout the streets every April," Stengard says. Cooper Elementary School serves prekindergarten through eighth grade and is rated a C on Niche.com. The school has a high level of diversity and is within a short drive, or even walk, for Castle Manor families. The school was also among the first solar panel-equipped schools in the city.

Ranch-styles and bungalows from the middle of the century

Growth in the middle of the 20th century yielded a healthy crop of modestly sized homes with midcentury architecture. Except for a few apartment complexes and healthcare facilities north of Layton Ave, the neighborhood is dense with gridded streets of evenly spaced ranch-style homes and duplexes. Almost every house has a large tree perfectly placed in the front, creating a lush green shade canopy for strolls throughout town. Three-bedroom ranches with brick facades range between $200,000 and $300,000, while the rare colonial revival or modern craftsman built in the mid-1990s lies closer to $450,000. Houses vary in size from two bedrooms up to five. Still, the manicured lawns are very uniform in size, providing just enough space for a swing set or trampoline along the detached garages of the back gardens.

Mediterranean eateries next door

South 27th Street, a prominent South Side business district, runs adjacent to the west of Castle Manor. Residents need only cross the street to reach several locally owned businesses, including a streak of international restaurants. Italian, Southern and Vietnamese cuisines are close, but the strip is most notable for its Mediterranean eateries. Two highly-rated options are Taqwa's Bakery & Restaurant and Lebnani House Restaurant. At Taqwa's, guests can sit beneath vibrant curtains draped across the walls and ceilings as they enjoy authentic Middle Eastern dishes like muhammara or baklava from the bakery. Lebnani serves up cuisine from the Levant, like kebab and shawarma, within an ornate, fine-dining atmosphere. Also along 27th Street are Festival Foods, Dollar Tree, Walgreens and a bank. Walmart and Sam's Club are 3 miles south of Castle Manor, alongside home improvement stores and fast-food chains.

Bordered by highways leading downtown

Some roads are prone to flooding, but lots are slightly inclined, and houses sit higher than the water. As a result, many roads are cracked and potholed, but sidewalks are in good condition for walking. Cornered by two major highways, there can be some traffic noise along the town's perimeters. Commuting 8 miles to downtown is easy thanks to an in-town on-ramp to Interstate 41. City buses run on South 27th Street and West Layton Ave, and the nearby Milwaukee International Airport makes long-distance travel easy. The airport is just over 3 miles east, and the nearest hospital, Ascension St. Francis Hospital, is 3 miles north. Castle Manor has a CAP Index crime score that is slightly above average. The overall score is a 5 out of 10, with burglary rating highest at a 7.

Acres of green spaces and courts

While Castle Manor isn't home to any parks, a few are open to the public within just a few blocks. The park behind Cooper Public School is south of the neighborhood, where many practice batting on the baseball diamond or challenge the couple next door to a doubles tennis match. Barnard Park is to the west in Greenfield, featuring two well-maintained basketball courts and 10 acres of green space for playing fetch or tossing around a football. Two miles north, across Interstate 43, is Wilson Park. Walking trails wind around lighted baseball diamonds, picnic shelters and a tot lot. Those looking to cool off by water can jump off the diving board at the public pool or cast a line at the large pond that is restocked with fish every fall. The park is also home to a Trunk-or-Treat event around Halloween, where young kids can collect candy out of the trunks of cars instead of having to walk from house to house.

I grew up in castle manor and had a great childhood. It feels like there's been more reports of crime lately but I haven't experienced anything myself.
